Heesen Yachts is proud to support and sponsor the Head north Expedition .
Head north is an extreme challenge for charity. A 100km trek from Barneo to the Geographic North Pole, the highest point on Earth at Latitude 90° North. The idea for head north was inspired by Y.CO ’s passion for adventure, commitment to corporate social responsibility and constant search for the ultimate challenge.
The team: Gary Wright, Charlie Birkett and Yves Damette of Y.CO, Rugby World Cup 2003 winners Danny Grewcock MBE, Josh Lewsey MBE and Lewis Moody MBE, Royal Marines Wayne Hoyle and James Nightingale and expedition leader, accomplished polar explorer Alan Chambers MBE.
They set off on 4 April from Ice Camp Barneo, situated 1° away from the North Pole. The sea ice here is strong enough to land planes. They are trekking northwards for 10 days. This journey is one of the most extreme tests of physical and psychological endurance that humans can experience. Temperatures remain between -25 and -50ºC. The group will battle over a constantly moving ice flow through an unpredictable polar climate pulling 60kg sledges.
Head north aims to raise in excess of £250,000 for people in desperate need. The Lewis Moody Foundation brings relief to families affected by serious illness, and raises funding for brain tumour research. The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund supports those injured in service to our country, and the families of those who gave their lives.
