The Bay of Islands is a classic New Zealand cruising region with sheltered waters, Opua marina access, islands, beaches and marine life.

The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand’s most attractive cruising regions, offering sheltered waters, islands, beaches, historic towns, marine life and access to Northland’s scenic coastline. Located north of Auckland, it is a classic yacht destination with a more relaxed and natural atmosphere than the city.

Russell, Paihia, Opua and the surrounding islands form the core cruising area. Opua is particularly important for visiting yachts because of its marina and marine services. The region is known for dolphins, fishing, sailing, anchorages, coastal walks and Māori and colonial history.

For superyachts, the Bay of Islands works well as a New Zealand cruising highlight, often combined with Auckland, the Hauraki Gulf, Whangaroa, the Poor Knights or longer Pacific movements. Weather and customs procedures should be planned carefully for international arrivals.
