Superyacht Guide

What is a Superyacht?

A superyacht is generally understood as a large, professionally crewed luxury yacht, although definitions vary.

The term superyacht is widely used in the luxury marine industry, but there is no single universal definition accepted in every context.

Many industry sources use length thresholds such as 24 metres or 30 metres, while others focus on features such as professional crew, luxury accommodation, custom design, range, amenities and operational complexity.

Common characteristics

Superyachts are usually large private or charter yachts with professional crew, high-quality accommodation, advanced engineering and significant operating requirements.

Motor and sailing yachts

Superyachts may be motor yachts or sailing yachts. They may be custom-built, semi-custom, production-based, explorer-style, classic, modern, private, charter-focused or used for a mixture of purposes.

Why definitions vary

Definitions vary because brokers, builders, regulators, insurers, marinas, media companies and classification bodies may use different thresholds depending on the subject.
