Destination Stars are editorial ratings based on cruising appeal, marina access, hospitality, scenery, events, seasonality and available information.

The Hauraki Gulf is Auckland’s principal yacht cruising ground, with Waiheke vineyards, Great Barrier anchorages and easy city access.

The Hauraki Gulf is Auckland’s immediate cruising ground and one of New Zealand’s most important yacht destinations. It combines island anchorages, vineyards, beaches, marine reserves, sailing culture and easy access from Auckland’s waterfront marinas.

Popular destinations include Waiheke Island, Great Barrier Island, Kawau Island, Rakino, Rotoroa and the Coromandel Peninsula. Waiheke is especially known for vineyards, restaurants and luxury lodges, while Great Barrier offers more remote anchorages and natural scenery.

For superyachts, the Hauraki Gulf is valuable because it can be enjoyed directly from Auckland while still giving guests a true New Zealand island-cruising experience. It works well for short owner trips, charter-style itineraries, regatta periods and pre/post refit cruising.
