Black Pearl is one of the most technically ambitious sailing yachts ever built and a landmark project in modern large-yacht design. Built by Oceanco and delivered in 2018, she measures approximately 106.7 metres and is recognised for combining very large yacht scale with advanced sailing technology and a distinctive three-masted DynaRig.
The yacht was developed under the project names Y712 and Project Solar, reflecting the unusually innovative brief behind the build. Her design involved several leading names, including Ken Freivokh Design, Nuvolari Lenard, Villate Design and Dykstra Naval Architects, with Oceanco responsible for construction.
Black Pearl’s most distinctive feature is her three-masted DynaRig. The freestanding carbon masts support a very large sail plan and give the yacht a dramatic, instantly recognisable silhouette. The system allows efficient sail handling on a yacht of exceptional size, combining classic square-rig visual drama with modern automated control.
Beyond her appearance, Black Pearl was conceived with a strong focus on efficiency and reduced environmental impact. Publicly reported features include regenerative systems that allow the yacht to generate power while sailing, advanced energy management and the ability to cross long distances under sail with greatly reduced fuel use compared with a similar-sized motor yacht.
The yacht’s interior and guest spaces remain relatively private, but she is publicly reported to accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 cabins, supported by a crew of around 26. Her amenities are understood to include a beach club, tender garage, Jacuzzi, cinema-style spaces, generous deck areas and a high level of private yacht comfort.
Black Pearl is significant not simply because of her size, but because she demonstrates that very large superyacht construction can still be centred around genuine sailing capability. She remains one of the most important sailing yachts of the modern era and a defining achievement for Oceanco and the design teams involved.
