Eclipse is one of the most famous large motor yachts in the world and a landmark project in the history of private superyacht construction. Built by Blohm+Voss in Hamburg and delivered in 2010, she measures approximately 162.5 metres and was, at delivery, the longest private yacht in the world.
The yacht was designed by Terence Disdale, who was responsible for both exterior and interior design. Eclipse has a powerful, formal profile with a dark hull, large white superstructure and extensive deck areas. Her styling is imposing but relatively restrained, with emphasis on scale, privacy and long-distance capability.
Eclipse was built for Roman Abramovich and quickly became one of the most recognised yachts in the global fleet. Her scale, security arrangements, helicopter facilities and media attention gave her a public profile beyond the normal superyacht world.
Public specifications list accommodation for up to 36 guests in 18 staterooms, supported by a crew of around 70. She has a gross tonnage of approximately 13,564 GT and is powered by a large diesel-electric propulsion arrangement, with a reported top speed of around 21 knots and cruising speed of approximately 20 knots.
Facilities publicly associated with Eclipse include two helicopter pads, a swimming pool, cinema, beach club, tenders, large guest spaces and extensive private owner facilities. Some reports also mention a mini-submarine and advanced security features, although such details should be treated carefully unless verified from primary sources.
Eclipse remains significant because of her combination of size, privacy, engineering and cultural recognition. She represents a defining period in giga yacht construction and remains one of the best-known yachts ever built by Blohm+Voss.
