Blohm+Voss is a historic German shipyard based in Hamburg, with origins dating back to 1877. Founded by Hermann Blohm and Ernst Voss, the yard became one of Germany’s most important shipbuilding names and has been associated with steel ship construction, naval vessels, commercial ships, repair work, refit projects and large custom yachts.
The shipyard’s location at Steinwerder in the Port of Hamburg gives it a strong maritime identity and access to one of Europe’s major port and industrial centres. Over its long history, Blohm+Voss has built a wide range of vessels, from ocean liners and naval ships to technically demanding private yachts. Its name is closely linked with German engineering, heavy shipbuilding capability and large-scale maritime construction.
In the superyacht sector, Blohm+Voss became known for some of the largest and most distinctive custom motor yachts ever built. The yard’s projects often featured complex engineering, unusual owner requirements, large volumes and highly individual exterior profiles. Many Blohm+Voss yachts are recognised not only for their size, but also for their technical ambition and strong visual identity.
In more recent years, the Hamburg site has been closely associated with yacht refit, repair and large-yacht service work. After becoming part of the Lürssen group in 2016, the Blohm+Voss facilities strengthened Lürssen’s capacity in large-yacht refit and specialist shipyard services. The Steinwerder yard remains an important name in the German maritime landscape, particularly for major refit, repair and complex yacht work.
Blohm+Voss occupies a distinctive place in superyacht history. While its modern role has shifted more toward refit and specialist services, its legacy as a builder of large, technically ambitious custom yachts remains significant.
