The road trip becomes part of the athletic challenge
Extreme swimmer Andy Donaldson travelled roughly 7,000 kilometres across Western Australia in a Porsche Macan 4S before tackling a 55-kilometre swim in the remote north. The drive became a long preparation phase rather than simply transport to the start.
Donaldson and his team followed the Western Australia EV Network, using a chain of fast and ultra-fast charging points across vast distances. Planning charging stops became another exercise in managing risk and logistics before the swim itself.
Endurance travel rewards preparation
The route ran from Perth toward the Ord River through sparsely populated regions where a failed charging stop could create a serious delay. Donaldson compared that preparation with ultraswimming, where success depends on anticipating problems before fatigue makes them difficult to solve.
The Macan 4S offered all-wheel drive and enough range to make the journey practical while carrying equipment and support crew. The experience tested electric touring in conditions far removed from dense urban charging networks.
Adventure does not need to separate car and destination
The strongest road journeys are often memorable because the travel itself becomes part of the story. Donaldson’s route combined landscape, endurance sport and vehicle logistics into one continuous expedition.
For yacht owners, the appeal is familiar from an offshore passage. Reaching the destination matters, but the planning, changing conditions and shared experience along the way can be equally important.
