The building began life as a fifteenth-century Franciscan monastery. The project has sought to preserve its character while adapting the property for guests who expect contemporary comfort and thoughtful private spaces.
Rooms with their own stories
The updated hotel has 39 rooms and suites, with three signature suites named Limonaia, Grand Tour and Botanica. Their design draws on different elements of Tuscan life and landscape.
Historic frescoes, marble and antiques remain part of the atmosphere alongside modern detailing. The range of layouts means travellers should choose their exact room or suite rather than assume a uniform arrangement.
A new Guerlain sanctuary
The hotel’s first spa has been created with Guerlain inside part of the former convent. Its treatments take inspiration from Florence and Renaissance traditions, extending the property’s heritage into the wellness programme.
Gardens and surrounding woodland provide places for slower activities such as yoga and restorative sessions. The hillside location gives those experiences a different quality from an urban spa.
Florence without the rush
The renovation also refreshes the hotel’s dining and shared spaces while keeping its relationship with the city below. A stay can combine art appointments and historic streets with time to return to the gardens.
For visitors travelling through Italy between yacht passages, Villa San Michele offers a deliberately land-based interlude. The reopening makes it possible to experience the familiar view of Florence through a newly considered hotel.
