Formula 1 Confirms 24-Race 2027 Calendar With 10 Sprint Weekends

Formula 1’s 2027 season will feature 24 Grands Prix, 10 Sprint weekends and returning races in Portugal and Turkiye across a 10-month global schedule.

Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed the 2027 championship calendar, setting out a 24-race season across 22 countries and increasing the number of Sprint weekends from six to ten. The schedule also restores Portugal and Turkiye, while grouping races more deliberately to improve geographical flow across the year.

Twenty-four races across five continents

The season is scheduled to begin in Bahrain before moving to Saudi Arabia, Australia, Japan and China, giving the opening months a strong Middle Eastern and Asia-Pacific emphasis. Formula 1 says the overall calendar has been arranged with travel efficiency in mind while preserving the global scale that now defines the championship.

The European leg will bring the sport back to Portugal before the summer sequence continues through established venues including Monaco, Silverstone, Spa and Budapest. Later in the year, Turkiye returns between Azerbaijan and Singapore before the championship moves through the Americas and closes in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Sprint racing expands substantially

The number of Sprint weekends rises to ten in 2027, the largest expansion since the format was introduced. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will host Sprint events for the first time, while Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar return to the short-race format.

That change means more weekends with competitive sessions on all three days and fewer conventional practice sessions. Formula 1 says Sprint weekends have delivered stronger audience figures and high approval among spectators, providing the commercial and sporting justification for expanding the format.

Portugal and Turkiye return

Portugal returns to the calendar after its most recent Formula 1 appearances in 2020 and 2021, adding another European destination to the season. Turkiye also rejoins with Istanbul Park, whose long multi-apex Turn 8 remains one of the circuit’s defining technical features.

Both additions strengthen the travel and destination element of the championship as well as the sporting calendar. Formula 1 increasingly operates as a global entertainment platform, and returning established venues gives fans another reason to combine race attendance with wider leisure and travel plans.

Testing is streamlined before the season

With the major technical regulation reset already introduced in 2026, Formula 1 plans a single four-day pre-season test in Bahrain ahead of the 2027 campaign. That is a shorter testing programme than the expanded running used before the current generation of cars made its debut.

The calendar therefore combines continuity in the regulations with a more intense event schedule once racing begins. For teams, drivers and travelling supporters, 2027 will be defined by 24 Grands Prix, ten Sprints and a season stretching from the Middle East in March to Abu Dhabi in December.
