POLAR STAR’s ice-class capability and 2017 interior refit connect northern cruising with a more modern interpretation of traditional onboard comfort.
The 63-metre POLAR STAR was conceived to explore both northern and southern waters rather than remaining exclusively on the Mediterranean circuit. Her ice-class engineering and later interior refit tell two sides of the same story: reaching colder destinations and creating a comfortable private environment once there.
Designed beyond the usual summer route
Espen Øino International drew a traditional-looking vessel capable of extended cruising in colder regions. Lürssen says her ice-class construction broadens the climates she can explore, although actual navigation remains governed by classification limits and conditions.
A polar-capable hull does not remove the need for careful passage planning, specialist weather information and competent crew. The point of the design is to widen the owner’s choices, not to suggest that every ice passage is safe or permitted.
An earlier country-house feeling
Pauline Nunns designed the original interior around a rustic country-house atmosphere with maritime influences. Hand-painted murals, antiques and generous gathering areas helped create a residential environment rather than a sparse expedition vessel.
Those details matter when a voyage includes long days at sea or remote anchorages. Comfort and familiarity can be an important part of the brief, even when the yacht’s engineering is directed towards more demanding destinations.
A documented change in 2017
The builder records an extensive interior refit in 2017, giving the accommodation a more modern, oceanic character. That is an identified historical design stage, not a recently announced 2026 overhaul or a new yacht construction programme.
The contrast shows that an established hull can retain its cruising purpose while the guest atmosphere changes over time. Claims about the current inventory should still be confirmed from the most recent yacht-specific listing before a booking or purchase.
The distinction between capability and lifestyle
The profile makes POLAR STAR interesting not merely because she can go farther afield, but because her guest spaces were designed for the time spent between destinations. An expedition brief is meaningful only if people can enjoy the journey as well as the destination.
