Rainer Behrendt and Jan Bongers drove a Porsche Cayenne from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska in a 100-day Pan-American journey.
A continent-spanning dream becomes a schedule
Rainer Behrendt and Jan Bongers set out to drive from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska in 100 days. Their Porsche Cayenne covered more than 40,000 kilometres across 15 countries as the pair followed the Pan-American route north.
The project grew from years of shared Porsche road trips and a desire to attempt something far larger. The journey also carried a charitable purpose connected with raising awareness around ALS.
The Andes quickly tested the plan
High-altitude sections through South America introduced both physical and mechanical challenges. The route climbed above 4,500 metres, where altitude sickness and the demands placed on the vehicle made the early stages unexpectedly difficult.
Those problems are part of what separates a true overland journey from a curated driving tour. Progress depends on flexibility, local knowledge and willingness to change plans when conditions stop cooperating.
One hundred days creates a different rhythm of travel
Moving through so many countries in a limited period forces travellers to balance distance with time to experience each region. The Cayenne had to function as transport, storage and a reliable base through changing climates and road conditions.
For SYG readers, the concept mirrors long-range cruising by yacht. A carefully chosen vehicle can turn movement between destinations into the central experience rather than a gap between more comfortable stops.
