Ressence Type 10 Dark Night Debuts Oil-Filled RW-04 Movement

Ressence introduces the Type 10 Dark Night, a 100-piece titanium edition with a new proprietary RW-04 automatic movement, oil-filled orbital dial and a CHF 45,000 price.

Ressence unveils its second in-house movement

Belgian independent watchmaker Ressence has introduced the Type 10 Dark Night, a new 41.5-millimetre titanium watch built around the company's second proprietary movement. Announced on 16 October 2026, the limited edition of 100 pieces combines a deeply coloured case with Ressence's signature oil-filled dial. This is a new technical design, not simply another dial colour on an unchanged movement.

The new model extends ideas introduced with the Type 11 earlier in 2026, but its streamlined profile goes further towards presenting the timepiece as one continuous form. Instead of hands turning on a flat dial, the wearer sees rotating satellites beneath a domed crystal. The result is an unusual interpretation of mechanical watchmaking rather than an electronic display.

Polished Grade 5 titanium with a deep-blue finish

The case is formed from Grade 5 titanium, polished before receiving a dark-blue diamond-like carbon coating. Founder Benoît Mintiens describes the design language in terms of hydrodynamics, with smooth contours and distinct edges suggesting the influence of moving water. A fitted blue rubber strap continues that sculptural appearance while providing a practical alternative to traditional leather.

The bezel uses 24 distinct components, alternating luminous sandblasted markers with brushed sections. Light reflects differently from their surfaces, while the crystal and caseback contribute to the almost seamless outline. Ressence lists water resistance of 50 metres, but owners should still check the manufacturer's guidance about exposure, winding and specialised servicing.

The oil-filled display creates extraordinary clarity

The Type 10 presents minutes on the main dial and uses satellites for the hours, running seconds and a second time zone. Its display omits conventional hour numerals for a minimalist appearance. A separate cutout monitors the temperature of the oil, which the manufacturer says performs correctly between approximately 10 and 25 degrees Celsius.

Ressence fills the display chamber with oil while keeping the movement in a separate air-filled compartment. Energy transfers through an array of nine micromagnets, allowing the indications to move without immersing conventional machinery. An expansion membrane compensates as the oil reacts to changes in temperature, an important consideration for the long-term stability of the display.

RW-04 automatic calibre inside

The Ressence Work 04 movement comprises 252 components and uses two barrels to provide a stated 60-hour power reserve. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it drives the company's ROCS display module through an intricate arrangement of bearings and gears. Without a normal crown, the watch is wound and set from the back of its case.

This construction places unusual demands on assembly, sealing and maintenance. A watch containing a separate liquid-filled display is not something to send casually to an ordinary repair counter. Collectors should confirm servicing arrangements and understand the special techniques required to maintain the display before acquiring such a technically distinctive reference.

A 100-piece release for adventurous collectors

Ressence has announced a price of CHF 45,000 excluding tax for the Type 10 Dark Night and a production limit of 100 pieces. Those are retail specifications, not predictions of future resale value. The grade of finishing and the appearance of the watch may attract buyers, but the strongest reason to consider the model is its unconventional engineering.

Its October debut demonstrates how an independent maker can continue developing traditional movement technology while challenging familiar ideas about how time should appear on a wrist. The watch's success as an object for daily use will depend on comfort and technical reliability as much as an unusual first impression.
