Rolls-Royce Builds a New Testway to Protect Its Signature Ride and Refinement

Rolls-Royce has opened the Eric Platford Testway at Goodwood to strengthen final validation of ride, refinement and cabin quality.

Refinement gets its own proving ground

Rolls-Royce has opened the Eric Platford Testway at Goodwood as a dedicated final-validation route for completed motor cars. The facility is named after Sir Henry Royce’s chief tester and is intended to protect the standards of composure and quietness associated with the marque.

The route allows engineers to reproduce low-speed direction changes, surface inputs and other everyday conditions before a car leaves the factory. That matters because refinement is judged through small sensations as much as headline performance.

Noise is tested before the road

Cars also pass through an aero-acoustic chamber where high-pressure air jets simulate wind noise at speeds above the UK motorway limit. Engineers can therefore investigate sealing and cabin noise without relying only on public-road conditions.

The combination of static acoustic work and dynamic testing gives the final validation team another layer of control. Rolls-Royce will still retain a local road route for sampled vehicles, so the new testway complements rather than replaces real-world checks.

Luxury measured in absence

At this level of motoring, quality is often defined by what the owner does not notice: vibration, loose objects, wind noise or unnecessary movement. A purpose-built testway turns those subtle expectations into repeatable engineering work.

For SYG readers, the thinking is familiar from yacht commissioning and sea trials. The most successful luxury products feel effortless because enormous technical effort has gone into removing distractions before the owner ever takes delivery.
