Danielle Carey has become manager of Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef, representing international visitation and marine-sector growth in North Queensland.

The Australian International Marine Export Group has appointed Danielle Carey as manager of Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef, with the new executive taking up the role on 12 October 2026. The Cairns-based position also supports the Australian Commercial Marine Group in North Queensland.

Carey's responsibilities include promoting international superyacht visits, representing local marine service providers and working with government and industry partners to develop the regional economy. The appointment follows an effort to increase the visibility of the Great Barrier Reef as a destination for large private yachts.

A dedicated regional leadership role

AIMEX describes the position as a full-time appointment serving both superyacht tourism and the commercial marine industry. The group will represent members involved in vessel visits, repair, refit, maintenance and specialist maritime services.

The remit is therefore broader than destination marketing or the management of an individual marina. Bringing organisations together can help visiting captains understand the local supply chain and improve coordination between regional businesses.

Experience in economic development

Carey previously served as chief executive of Regional Development Australia Tropical North and held policy and economic-development positions with Advance Cairns. Her background also includes export development work with Brisbane Marketing.

Such experience may prove valuable in explaining the commercial significance of visiting yachts to infrastructure providers and public agencies. Detailed engineering and maritime regulatory decisions still remain the responsibility of the appropriately qualified authorities and technical specialists.

Promoting the Great Barrier Reef corridor

The region stretches from Gladstone through the Whitsundays and Cairns to the Torres Strait, encompassing different ports, anchorages and cruising environments. Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef promotes it as a connected destination for exploration and marine support.

A visiting superyacht's route may involve permits, customs arrangements, operational constraints and weather planning. Regional promotion should be combined with authoritative information from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the port operators concerned.

Backing Cairns marine businesses

Cairns is an established arrival and refit gateway for the northern Great Barrier Reef. Local marinas and shipyards support a wide variety of large-yacht work, from provisioning and mechanical servicing to specialist engineering and crew logistics.

A central regional representative can connect visitors with suitable businesses while helping members communicate their capabilities to an international audience. Individual contractors must still demonstrate the certifications, capacity and insurance appropriate to the yacht's proposed work.

A role linked to exports and investment

AIMEX has emphasised the link between superyacht visitation and jobs for businesses providing local goods and services. Carey will work with operators and government stakeholders to attract more vessels and support investment across the broader marine economy.

Economic benefits should be evaluated through reliable data on spending, employment and the services purchased by visitors. The appointment does not itself establish a new public funding allocation or a completed port infrastructure project.

Supporting workforce development

Regional maritime businesses face the challenge of attracting and keeping specialist employees, particularly when work is seasonal or spread among multiple ports. Industry bodies can help promote training opportunities and identify common shortages raised by members.

Meaningful workforce progress requires engagement with employers, educators and appropriate regulators. A regional manager can facilitate those conversations, although the announcement does not set measurable new training quotas or certify particular programmes.

International relationships matter

The Australian superyacht industry competes with destinations around the world for owners' attention and for maintenance business. Carey's background in international export development could support partnerships that help connect vessels with North Queensland providers.

Captains deciding where to call assess practical factors such as local expertise, berthing, clearance procedures and availability of spare parts. Consistent communication across regional ports can make long-range itinerary planning easier without changing the underlying navigation requirements.

What the appointment establishes

The 13 October announcement confirms Carey's start date, Cairns base and the organisations her role will support. It does not disclose a new marina opening or report a specific number of additional yacht visits caused by the appointment.

Further coverage can assess new industry initiatives and published visitation data as the work develops. The immediate significance is dedicated representation for North Queensland's superyacht and commercial marine sectors.
