Former NATO Secretary General to Open The Superyacht Forum 2026

Former NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer will open The Superyacht Forum 2026 with a keynote examining geopolitics, leadership and the external forces shaping the superyacht sector. The event takes place at RAI Amsterdam on 16 and 17 November under the theme “Accelerate the Evolution”.

The appointment broadens the forum beyond technical and commercial discussion by placing political risk, international relations and leadership directly into the industry agenda. For yacht builders, brokers, managers, owners’ representatives and suppliers, those issues increasingly influence sanctions exposure, trade, finance, ownership structures, crew movement, insurance and access to global markets.

Geopolitics moves onto the superyacht agenda

De Hoop Scheffer served as NATO Secretary General and previously held senior Dutch government roles. The organisers say his keynote will consider how governments, international organisations and global markets affect the health of the superyacht industry, with the discussion presented from a politically neutral standpoint.

That framing is relevant because large-yacht transactions and operations are unusually international. A single project can involve a shipyard in one country, design and engineering teams in several others, financing elsewhere, a flag state, class society, global suppliers and an owner structure spanning multiple jurisdictions.

Leadership and market risk

The forum’s 2026 programme is being developed with input from the Superyacht Industry Advisory Council and organisations operating across brokerage, crew, construction and wider marine-industry representation. The organisers say the aim is to move discussion from ambition toward implementation while testing conventional assumptions about how the sector should evolve.

De Hoop Scheffer’s contribution is intended to establish the wider strategic setting before delegates move into more specialised discussions. Geopolitical uncertainty can affect everything from material sourcing and shipyard contracts to insurance pricing, banking, sanctions compliance and the movement of yachts between cruising regions.

Economic context will follow the keynote

The programme will also connect global wealth trends with superyacht market performance, examining billionaire growth, ownership, new-build activity and development of the worldwide fleet. That creates a useful bridge between macroeconomic conditions and the commercial decisions made by builders, brokers and owners.
