Informa, operator of the Monaco and Fort Lauderdale yacht shows, has agreed a £2.24bn acquisition of Clarion's professional events business.

A £2.24bn deal reshapes the owner of major yacht exhibitions

Informa, the London-listed events company behind several of the world's most prominent yacht exhibitions, announced on 6 October that it had agreed to buy Clarion Events from Blackstone for £2.24 billion. The proposed transaction expands a business whose existing yachting activities include Monaco Yacht Show, Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Miami International Boat Show and Palm Beach International Boat Show.

The deal matters because yacht exhibitions are not simply occasions to exhibit vessels. They are concentrated marketplaces where builders arrange meetings with potential owners, brokers show yachts for sale, and suppliers introduce systems to the crews and yards that may specify them years later. The corporate owner controls investment in venues, digital marketing and the infrastructure supporting these activities.

Clarion would add more than one hundred event brands

Clarion operates specialist exhibitions in fields including electronics, security, gaming, technology and energy. Informa expects its wider live-events group to encompass more than 1,000 event brands in over 30 countries after the acquisition. The company is also proposing to separate Taylor & Francis, its academic publishing business, as it concentrates on professional live events.

The purchase will be financed in part with an equity placing of about £940 million alongside committed acquisition funding. Those financing plans and the proposed separation form part of a broader change in Informa's business structure, rather than a specific investment programme announced for any individual yacht show.

Why scale could affect the yacht-show experience

A large events group may be able to coordinate international marketing, digital ticketing and customer information across multiple industries. For superyacht exhibitors, relationships with buyers in real estate, hospitality, aviation and other high-value sectors may offer commercial opportunities that are not confined to marine events.

Yet there are practical limits to treating yacht shows like conventional exhibition halls. Large vessels need secure berths, harbour permissions, shoreside utilities, tender movements and tightly scheduled private tours. Those requirements remain specific to each marina and host city regardless of the parent company's wider corporate reach.

No 2026 show changes are implied by the agreement

The company has not announced new dates, relocated marinas or revised entry terms for the forthcoming Fort Lauderdale show as a consequence of the acquisition. Exhibitors should therefore continue to use published event information until organisers provide any subsequent operational notices.

Likewise, the sale agreement is not equivalent to an immediate merger of all Clarion and Informa events. Completion and integration steps remain separate from the public announcement, and the commercial effect will depend on decisions taken after those processes are finished.

The larger issue is where the yachting industry meets buyers

International yacht exhibitions have been under pressure to demonstrate value to shipyards and brokers who must balance travel, berth charges, security and staff time against actual sales opportunities. A change in their corporate owner could lead to additional investment, but financial scale alone does not guarantee more qualified buyers.

For SYG's shipyard and brokerage audience, the transaction is best understood as a significant development in the ownership of a key route to market. The most useful evidence of success will be changes to exhibitor support, attendance quality and show operations, not the headline purchase price itself.
