Sardinia commits €3m to finish Marina di Cannigione's harbour improvements, alongside pier expansion, upgraded utilities and fire protection near the Costa Smeralda.
Sardinia's regional government has allocated €3 million to complete further work at Marina di Cannigione, on the island's north-eastern coast. The decision, made on September 22, 2026, supports the final stage of a harbour redevelopment with a total stated budget of approximately €4.8 million, according to the project update published by Marina World.
Cannigione sits near Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda, an area where summer yacht movements create demand for safe moorings, reliable utilities and practical shore facilities. The funding is intended to address infrastructure still requiring completion rather than announce an entirely new marina or prove that every planned berth is now available.
The wider public works programme has been coordinated through Arzachena's municipal administration, with improvements to both the working harbour and the adjacent waterfront. Different construction packages have separate schedules, so their overall completion should not be assumed from the latest grant allocation.
Completed elements include a new control tower funded at approximately €472,000 and now used by the harbour master's office. This is an operational investment because a marina's ability to manage arrivals, observe conditions and coordinate activity depends on suitable space and communications as much as the physical pontoons.
An eastern-arm project valued at approximately €1.378 million is expected to begin in mid-October 2026, strengthening the outer harbour and creating space for a stated 38 berths there. A further 67 berths are envisaged along the northern quays for medium and larger vessels, although the size and availability of individual positions will depend on the final operating arrangements.
The latest €3 million allocation is intended to complete water and electrical distribution, fire-protection systems, paving, cladding, lighting and other parts of the shore infrastructure. These components are essential to safe yacht operations and should not be dismissed as secondary works simply because they are less visible than a new jetty.
Cannigione is within reach of Porto Cervo and Olbia Airport, making it useful to visiting owners, guests and crews exploring north-eastern Sardinia. The area's strong seasonal demand can make alternative marinas valuable, particularly when owners need to plan embarkations, provisions or a technical stop outside the busiest ports.
The existing marina's published services include mooring buoys for vessels between seven and 35 metres, supported by local repair, haul-out and winter-storage options offered directly or through neighbouring operators. These dimensions should not be read as confirmation that every newly planned berth will accept a 35-metre yacht.
Captains of larger vessels have to consider draft, turning space, local weather exposure and the exact specification of individual berths. A regional funding decision is a sign of future investment, but the port authority's current guidance remains the correct basis for preparing an actual arrival.
Two of the three waterfront improvement phases have been completed, including pavements, electrical work, road markings, landscaping and railings. The remaining section extends towards the southern entrance to Cannigione and is still at the detailed design stage, with a procurement process anticipated in 2027.
The harbour and promenade works are related but should not be reported as a single project with one completion date. Access may be affected during building activity, and vessel operators should check local notices before committing to an arrival or scheduling a haul-out.
For yacht owners, the investment is a reminder that the reliability of a marina depends on ongoing maintenance of basic systems and effective access for crews as well as on high-profile amenities. The accompanying photograph comes from the municipal administration and depicts the real Cannigione harbour, not a rendering of uncompleted construction.
