Westhaven Marina has been named a finalist in the New Zealand Marina Operators Association Awards after Auckland Council reshaped its marina cadetship into a structured capability-development programme. The initiative now spans Westhaven Marina, Auckland Central Marina and Silo Marina, giving cadets a defined pathway through operational, technical and customer-facing work.
Auckland Council says the programme has changed substantially over the past two years, moving away from a largely observational shadowing model. Cadets now work through clear learning pathways, competency milestones, formal training, structured workplace learning, six-monthly rotations across the three marinas and dedicated mentoring.
The revised programme is designed to produce multi-skilled marina professionals rather than staff trained for a single function. Its scope runs from customer service, administration and invoicing to vessel handling, marina infrastructure, health and safety and international superyacht operations.
That breadth matters in Auckland, where marina teams can encounter everything from local recreational craft to visiting large yachts moving through New Zealand’s principal marine-service hub. Building operational knowledge across several sites also exposes cadets to different berth environments, customer requirements and infrastructure rather than keeping development within one marina.
The programme uses six-monthly rotations across Westhaven, Auckland Central and Silo marinas as part of its workplace-learning structure. Auckland Council says the model is intended to accelerate learning while creating more consistent capability across its marina network.
A separate April update shows the approach already in operation, with cadets moving between sites and into practical maintenance and marina-operations roles. The structure is therefore more than an awards submission: it is an active workforce-development system built around progressive responsibility and exposure to different parts of the marina business.
Auckland Council links the cadetship directly to succession planning and operational resilience, two issues that have become increasingly important as marinas compete for staff with technical, customer-service and vessel-handling skills. A structured pathway also gives new entrants a clearer route into an industry whose operational knowledge has often been developed informally on the job.
For the superyacht sector, the relevance is practical rather than promotional. Visiting yachts depend on marina personnel who understand berth operations, safety, infrastructure, contractor coordination and the different service expectations that accompany internationally operated vessels.
Westhaven is a finalist in the Outstanding Initiative category for full members of the New Zealand Marina Operators Association. The association’s awards recognise innovation and operational excellence across New Zealand’s marina industry, with the 2026 winners due to be announced at the NZMOA Awards Dinner on 24 September.
The nomination gives Auckland’s three-marina training model wider industry visibility at a time when workforce development is becoming a strategic issue for marinas and boatyards. If the programme continues to convert structured training into experienced operations staff, its significance will extend beyond the award itself to the resilience of Auckland’s wider yacht-support network.
