Northrop & Johnson data shows global yacht charter starts up 20.8% through August 2026, while the market splits between late bookers and early 2027 planners.

Charter activity finishes summer ahead of 2025

Northrop & Johnson’s January-to-August data shows global yacht charter starts running 20.8% ahead of the same period in 2025, while booked charter days were 18.9% higher. The figures indicate that a cautious start to the year did not translate into a weaker summer season.

The pattern changed as the season progressed, with June and July becoming particularly active. July represented the high point of the last-minute trend, while August showed a move toward both lower immediate booking volume and substantially more planning for 2027.

Booking windows compressed into the season

In May, 36.3% of bookings were for charters beginning that month or the following month. That proportion rose to 51.9% in June and 66.7% in July, demonstrating how many clients delayed decisions until close to departure.

August then recorded 741 bookings, down from 1,099 in July, and only 37.9% related to same- or next-month departures. The shift suggests July was an unusually concentrated last-minute month rather than proof that every charter client has permanently moved to late booking.

Early demand for 2027 is already visible

Northrop & Johnson reports that 43% of bookings made in August were for charters taking place in 2027, with another 1.8% for 2028 or 2029. Combined, 44.8% of August bookings were therefore for the following year or later.

June and July 2027 accounted for 163 of the future bookings made during August, with a further 48 for August 2027. That points to a market dividing between flexible clients willing to wait and clients securing a specific yacht, itinerary or peak week well in advance.

Mediterranean demand remains dominant

The Mediterranean accounted for 67.5% of bookings made during August, led by the Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean and Adriatic. The figures show that the summer market remains geographically concentrated even as booking behaviour becomes less uniform.

For owners and charter managers, the practical implication is that calendar strategy may need to serve two very different customers at once. Late availability can still convert close to departure, while the strongest yachts and dates for 2027 are already beginning to be committed.
