Using Overhangs and Hardtops for Shade

Overhangs and hardtops are permanent parts of the yacht's architecture that can provide reliable shade while shaping the profile. Their depth, height and relationship with glazing influence comfort, views and how heavily or lightly the superstructure appears.

Permanent shade should be part of the exterior form

An overhang is more than a roof placed above furniture. Its depth and edge line become part of the yacht's profile and affect how the superstructure is perceived from the water. Permanent shade works best when it grows naturally from the architecture.

Depth determines how much of the deck remains protected

A shallow overhang may shade the glazing immediately below while leaving most seating exposed. A deeper projection can create a genuinely sheltered outdoor room. The required depth depends on sun angle, deck orientation and the intended activity.

Overhangs can reduce direct solar exposure on glass

Large expanses of glazing provide excellent views but can receive substantial direct sun. Extending the deck above can shade the glass while preserving transparency. This allows exterior geometry to contribute passively to comfort rather than relying only on systems hidden inside the yacht.

A hardtop creates a stronger architectural destination

A roof over a lounge, bar or dining area can make that zone feel more like an outdoor room than an open deck. The ceiling surface then becomes important for lighting, materials and visual continuity with the surrounding superstructure.

Shade should not make the yacht look excessively heavy

Deep horizontal decks can visually stack one above another and increase the apparent mass of the superstructure. Curves, setbacks, thin edges and strategic openings can provide useful shade while preserving a lighter profile.

Open sides maintain the relationship with the sea

A hardtop can protect guests from overhead sun while keeping the sides fully open. This combination often creates useful comfort without turning the deck into another enclosed room. Furniture should remain oriented toward the views that justify the exterior location.

Skylights can restore light beneath large roofs

A broad hardtop may shade more area than desired and make the centre of a large deck feel dark. Carefully positioned skylights can introduce daylight while retaining substantial sun protection around the edges.

Shade should follow the way the deck changes through the day

The useful shaded zone moves as the yacht's orientation and sun position change. Furniture plans should not assume one fixed shadow. A mix of covered and open seating gives guests more choice than designing the entire deck around a single ideal midday condition.

Permanent shelter can support longer seasonal use

A covered deck remains more useful during light rain and cooler weather than a completely exposed terrace. Adding wind protection at selected sides can extend that benefit further without permanently enclosing the space.

Good shade design combines comfort with profile

The most successful overhang does several jobs at once: it shades guests and glazing, defines an outdoor destination and strengthens the yacht's exterior lines. Treating those effects together produces a more convincing result than adding shade only after the profile has been designed.
