Managing Design Changes During Approval and Construction

Yacht design continues to evolve after approval begins. Every material change must be assessed against affected drawings, calculations, class comments and construction status so the approved design and physical yacht do not quietly diverge.

Change is normal during yacht construction

Detailed design, supplier information, owner decisions and shipyard discoveries continue after initial approval work has started. The problem is therefore not preventing every change but controlling its technical consequences. A disciplined project distinguishes a harmless drafting correction from a change that alters loads, scantlings, stability, subdivision or another approved assumption.

The current approved baseline must be identifiable

Before evaluating a change, the team needs to know which drawing and calculation revisions form the current approved basis. Without a controlled baseline, designers can compare against the wrong version and miss earlier class comments. Revision status should therefore remain visible in the document management system throughout construction.

Impact assessment should follow the change across disciplines

Moving a bulkhead can affect structure, tank capacity, subdivision and stability. Enlarging a shell opening can affect strength, freeboard and damage assumptions. A change should therefore be traced through every dependent calculation and drawing rather than assessed only in the discipline that initiated it.

Weight change deserves explicit review

New equipment, heavier interiors or structural reinforcement changes displacement and centres of gravity even when the physical alteration appears local. Significant additions, removals or relocations should enter the controlled weight record so the stability basis remains current. Accumulated small changes can become important even when each one seems minor.

Revised approval evidence should accompany the changed design

Where the change affects an approved calculation, revising only the drawing is insufficient. The associated structural, stability or weight analysis should be updated so the evidence still supports the geometry being built. The same revision relationship should be clear to the classification reviewer.

Construction status changes the cost of late decisions

A modification made while the design exists only in CAD may be straightforward. The same change after steel, aluminium or composite structure has been completed can require cutting, rework and additional survey. Change control should therefore include the physical build status before approval of the modification.

Class comments should not disappear between revisions

A revised drawing can inadvertently remove a detail that was added specifically to resolve an earlier approval comment. Comment tracking should therefore remain linked with the design history until closure. A new revision is not automatically better merely because it carries a later number.

Site modifications need formal capture

Shipyard teams sometimes adjust brackets, penetrations or equipment positions to solve practical fabrication problems. Where those changes affect approved structure or arrangement, they should be recorded and reviewed rather than remaining only as local workshop knowledge. Otherwise the final technical record may describe a yacht that was never actually built.

As-built drawings should emerge from controlled change records

The final as-built set should not require designers to reconstruct months of modifications from memory. If changes are logged, reviewed and incorporated as they occur, the final drawings naturally converge toward the physical yacht. This greatly improves later survey, refit and damage-assessment work.

Change control protects approval rather than obstructing design

A controlled process does not mean freezing innovation. It allows the project to change while preserving the evidence that structure, stability and other regulated functions remain acceptable. The objective is that the yacht delivered at the end still has a traceable technical relationship with the design that class and flag agreed to approve.
