Reading and Using a Yacht Stability Book
The approved stability book translates naval-architecture analysis into usable operating information. It defines loading conditions, hydrostatic limits, tank assumptions and restrictions that help the crew keep the yacht within its approved stability envelope.

A stability book converts the naval architect's hydrostatic and stability calculations into approved information that can be used to operate the yacht within a defined envelope. It does not merely prove that the vessel passed a calculation during construction. It documents the assumptions, loading conditions, tank states, centres of gravity and limitations on which that approval depends. For masters and officers, understanding the document is essential because the actual yacht must continue to resemble the conditions represented in the approved analysis.
Before using any stability information, confirm that the document applies to the correct yacht, revision and approved configuration. Significant refits, structural alterations, new tenders or equipment changes may make an older booklet incomplete or obsolete. Approval stamps, revision histories and accompanying letters can identify the governing version. A technically plausible calculation that does not represent the yacht's current approved condition should not be treated as the controlling operational document.
Stability books use defined longitudinal, transverse and vertical datums for centres of gravity, drafts and tank locations. Before interpreting KG, VCG, LCG or other values, identify the reference from which they are measured and the sign convention used. Different software or yards can adopt different coordinate origins. Copying a centre-of-gravity number from another document without its datum can therefore produce a serious error even when the numerical value itself has been transcribed correctly.
The approved lightship weight and centre of gravity form an important baseline for subsequent loading conditions. Those values are normally established or verified through approved weight-control procedures and an inclining experiment or lightship survey as applicable. Fuel, water, stores, people and payload are then added to represent operating conditions. If the yacht gains material permanent weight after approval, the lightship basis can change and may require formal reassessment rather than an informal spreadsheet adjustment.
A stability book typically presents representative operating conditions rather than one universal state. These can include departure and arrival states, variations in consumables or other conditions required by the governing standard. Each condition combines specified weights and tank fillings to produce displacement, draft, trim and centres of gravity. Reading the conditions sequentially shows how the yacht's stability evolves as fuel, fresh water and other variable loads change during operation.
Tank tables identify capacities, centres and often free-surface properties. The loading condition then states which tanks are full, empty or partially filled. These details matter because liquid distribution affects displacement, trim, centres of gravity and free-surface correction. A real operating condition that differs materially from the approved tank pattern may therefore require calculation rather than assumption. Crew should understand how the yacht's loading system or manual procedure represents actual tank quantities.
Calculated forward, aft and mean drafts are useful because they can be compared with observed draft marks or other reliable measurements where conditions permit. A large difference between calculated and observed immersion can indicate incorrect weight, tank quantity, density or loading information. Draft agreement does not prove every stability input is correct, but it is a valuable physical consistency check linking the paper or software loading condition to the actual floating yacht.
Depending on the approved format, the book may present GM, maximum allowable KG or VCG, GZ curves, areas under the curve, downflooding angles and compliance against specific criteria. The operator does not need to reproduce every naval-architecture calculation, but must understand which outputs demonstrate compliance and which limits cannot be exceeded. A positive GM alone is not necessarily sufficient if other required intact-stability criteria are not satisfied.
A stability booklet can contain restrictions relating to tank use, lifting operations, tender handling, loading, wind, openings or other yacht-specific circumstances. These are not optional notes detached from the calculations; they may be necessary assumptions underlying compliance. Changes in operating practice should therefore be checked against the approved information. If a desired operation falls outside the documented envelope, the correct response is technical assessment rather than extrapolation.
Yachts evolve throughout their lives. New furniture, AV systems, tenders, cranes, batteries, deck equipment and refit work can alter both weight and centre of gravity. Individually small additions can accumulate into a significant lightship change. Maintaining an accurate weight-change record and triggering the required surveys or reassessment protects the validity of the approved stability information. The stability book is therefore a living operational reference tied to the actual vessel, not merely a handover document from the shipyard.
