Displacement, Volume and Displacement Tonnage
Displacement connects a yacht's mass to the volume of water its immersed hull displaces. This guide also separates displacement from gross tonnage, one of the most common terminology errors in yacht discussions.

A floating yacht settles until the buoyant force generated by the displaced water balances the yacht's weight. In naval-architecture language, displacement therefore links the yacht's mass with the volume of the immersed hull. Change the yacht's weight and the equilibrium waterline must change until the displaced water provides the corresponding buoyancy. This relationship is fundamental to hydrostatics, draft prediction, stability, trim and weight control. It is also why a yacht cannot gain substantial weight during design or refit without some consequence for draft, freeboard, stability or performance.
Displacement volume is the underwater volume enclosed by the hull surface at a particular waterline and trim. Multiplying that volume by the density of the surrounding water gives the corresponding mass of displaced water, which in static equilibrium corresponds to the yacht's mass. Naval architects may use the displacement symbol for mass or weight depending on convention and unit system, so units must always be checked. Cubic metres describe volume; tonnes describe mass. Treating the numerical value alone without its units can conceal a major error.
A given yacht mass requires a larger displaced volume in less dense water and a smaller volume in denser water. Consequently, the same yacht will normally float at a different draft in fresh water than in seawater. Stability booklets, hydrostatic data and loading calculations therefore use stated density assumptions or provide methods for correction. The effect is not a change in the yacht's actual mass; it is a change in the volume of water that must be displaced to produce equal buoyancy.
Lightship represents the yacht in a defined completed condition without many variable loads, while deadweight accounts for variable weights such as fuel, fresh water, stores, people and other carried loads according to the applicable definition. Operating displacement is the total displacement in a particular loading condition. The exact definitions used in approved documents govern. For design and refit work, a weight change should not be described simply as an increase in 'tonnage'; the correct weight and loading category needs to be identified.
Once a hull form is defined, hydrostatic calculations can determine displacement and other properties over a range of drafts. A displacement-versus-draft relationship allows a naval architect to estimate how much the waterline changes when weight is added or removed, subject to trim and other assumptions. These curves are properties of the hull geometry and water density used in the calculation. They should not be confused with a fixed operating condition: the actual yacht occupies one point on those relationships for each loading state.
Gross tonnage, abbreviated GT, is not a weight and is not the mass of water displaced by the yacht. Under the IMO tonnage convention, gross tonnage is calculated from the moulded volume of enclosed spaces using the convention's formula. It is dimensionless even though everyday speech often attaches the word 'tons' to it. A 500 GT yacht is not therefore a yacht that weighs 500 tonnes. This distinction is especially important in the superyacht sector because GT is widely used to describe internal scale and regulatory thresholds.
Although GT is not displacement, it matters greatly because enclosed volume influences the yacht's commercial description and can interact with regulatory applicability. Designers often discuss how much usable enclosed volume can be achieved within a given length, beam and profile, but that question is different from asking what the yacht weighs. Two yachts of similar GT can have different displacements, while two yachts of similar displacement can have very different enclosed volumes and therefore different GT values.
If equipment, structure, interiors or systems become heavier during design, the completed yacht must displace more water unless another weight is removed. The consequences can include increased draft, reduced freeboard, changed trim, altered centres of gravity and increased resistance. This is why disciplined weight engineering begins long before launch. A weight estimate is not merely an accounting document: it predicts the hydrostatic condition in which the hull must operate.
There is no single universally useful displacement number for every purpose. A yacht may be discussed at lightship, half-load, departure, arrival, design or maximum approved conditions, among others. Fuel and water consumption can change displacement and trim materially during a voyage. When comparing yachts or reviewing calculations, the displacement figure should therefore be accompanied by the loading condition, water density and relevant draft or trim information.
When a document uses the word tonnage, determine immediately whether it means GT, NT, deadweight, displacement mass or another defined quantity. Then check the units. GT and NT are convention-based tonnage measures; displacement mass will normally be expressed in tonnes or another mass unit; displacement volume is expressed as volume. Keeping these quantities separate prevents one of the most persistent errors in yacht specifications and gives later stability, weight and performance analysis a sound foundation.

Gross tonnage is not a measure of yacht weight or mass. Displacement, GT, deadweight and lightweight describe different technical quantities and should never be interchanged.
