The 28.04-metre sailing yacht CABOCHON has been sold, with Northrop & Johnson representing the seller after the yacht was last asking $1.675 million.

A custom 28-metre sailing yacht changes ownership

Northrop & Johnson has confirmed the sale of CABOCHON, a 28.04-metre sailing yacht built by Ta Chiao Bros. Yacht Building. Broker Brian Commette represented the seller, and the most recent asking price was reported as $1.675 million. The final transaction price has not been disclosed.

CABOCHON is a different proposition from a modern series-built motor yacht of similar length. Her long sailing lines, specialised keel arrangement and recently maintained systems give buyers an opportunity to assess a capable cruising vessel with a distinct history and personality.

A keel-centreboard arrangement broadens cruising options

The yacht is designed with a keel-centreboard configuration that allows the draft to be reduced for access to shallower waters, while preserving a deeper configuration when appropriate for sailing. A carbon-fibre mast with four spreaders supports the rig, and the construction incorporates Corecell, Kevlar reinforcement and epoxy materials.

These features should be evaluated together during a survey. Rig condition, centreboard operation, hull structure and the maintenance of associated controls can be as important as the appearance of the deck or interior. The arrangement also influences the routes and anchorages an owner may choose.

The refit programme addressed more than decoration

Recent work since 2020 has included hull painting, replacement chillers, Starlink connectivity, new sails, navigation and electronics upgrades and overhaul of hydraulic equipment. This is a varied programme spanning comfort, communication, sailing performance and vessel operation.

A buyer should examine which components were renewed, when the work was completed and whether service documentation remains available. A rolling refit can be preferable to prolonged neglect, but it is not identical to a complete rebuilding programme or new-vessel warranty.

Two cockpits and a folding transom support life outdoors

CABOCHON has broad side decks, separate cockpit areas and a folding transom platform that can improve access to the water and tender handling. Traditional overhangs and a pronounced sheer give her a recognisably classic sailing profile.

The yacht's layout is intended to allow crews and guests to enjoy sailing while retaining usable social spaces at anchor. The arrangement needs to be judged with the owner's intended crew size and sailing programme, especially if longer passages are planned.

Six guests can stay aboard in three cabins

Guest accommodation includes a full-beam owner's area aft and two convertible cabins for visitors. A raised saloon uses large windows to improve outward views, with another lower saloon providing dining and seating.

The completed sale marks a change in ownership rather than a confirmed programme of future refit or cruising. Her value to the new owner will depend on the combination of sailing capability, accommodation and maintenance requirements, not simply the last published asking figure.
