Northrop & Johnson lists the 49.9m Mangusta BLACK LEGEND at €16.9m after a further €3m asking-price reduction, with the yacht offered in southern France.
Northrop & Johnson is offering the 49.9-metre Mangusta BLACK LEGEND at €16,900,000, following a further €3 million reduction from the previously advertised €19.9 million. The current brokerage listing confirms the price for the 2017-built yacht, represented by broker Ed Dickinson. The latest adjustment is a distinct October development, rather than a first announcement that the yacht has entered the market.
The asking price is an invitation to negotiate, not the sum achieved in a completed sale or an independently established market valuation. A seller may revise an offer for reasons not disclosed publicly. Buyers should request written confirmation of the current amount and all relevant conditions before interpreting the new figure as evidence of the owner's circumstances or the mechanical state of the vessel.
Overmarine constructed BLACK LEGEND as the penultimate yacht in its Mangusta 165E series, a family distinguished by long profiles, powerful machinery and comparatively high speeds. Built in 2017, this example has a composite hull and superstructure, with a gross tonnage of around 485. The broker says she has remained with her original private owner and has received careful maintenance throughout that period.
The yacht underwent refit work in 2022 and the official listing reports an ABS five-year special survey in that year. Such history may help buyers understand earlier investment in the vessel, but it is not equivalent to evidence of current condition. An independent survey must assess the structure, systems and classification position at the time of an actual purchase.
Northrop & Johnson lists four MTU diesel engines producing approximately 2,600 horsepower each. Its published figures indicate a maximum speed near thirty-five knots and a cruising speed of about twenty-five knots, with a range in the region of eight hundred nautical miles under the relevant operating conditions. Those figures put BLACK LEGEND among the high-performance maxi-open designs rather than long-range displacement explorers.
Fast running imposes substantial demands on the machinery, fuel arrangements and crew. A buyer comparing the yacht with slower vessels of similar length should obtain actual fuel-consumption curves, recent sea-trial evidence and a thorough engineering assessment. Advertised range and speed cannot be guaranteed under every combination of sea state, load, fouling and propulsion settings.
The interior includes an expansive full-beam owner's suite amidships, with a private study and dressing space. Northrop & Johnson identifies four guest cabins with accommodation for up to ten guests, according to the listed arrangement, and a separate cinema. Crew accommodation is described for nine. The yacht's design balances private areas with the larger shared spaces expected of a nearly fifty-metre vessel.
Interiors use a strong contemporary visual language, with contrasting finishes and carefully arranged lighting. A prospective purchaser should inspect materials, upholstery, air-conditioning and storage and verify actual sleeping configurations and escape routes. Pictures may help establish the look of a yacht, but they do not prove that its furnishings or hotel systems are in the condition a new owner would expect.
The seller promotes an unusually expansive aft deck as one of BLACK LEGEND's distinctive features. Outdoor amenities include a jacuzzi, bars, extensive seating and a DJ booth, providing multiple settings for guests who want to entertain or relax at anchor. The open-air arrangement reflects the Mangusta approach to Mediterranean cruising, where exterior space can be as important to daily life as interior accommodation.
Practical use of a large deck depends on protective fittings, access routes and safe operation of equipment. Prospective buyers should examine the condition of exposed surfaces, railings, deck machinery and awnings, along with any moving platforms or boarding systems. The yacht's entertainment spaces may be attractive, but the work needed to maintain them should form part of an overall ownership budget.
BLACK LEGEND is offered with a gym and cinema as well as extensive onboard systems intended to make private cruising more comfortable. The current listing also describes gyroscopic stabilisation at rest and underway. These features can contribute to enjoyment aboard, but they require proper installation, operation and maintenance and should be reviewed as part of a detailed technical inventory.
Gyroscopic systems cannot eliminate motion in all sea conditions, and different guests will experience movement differently. A cinema and gym likewise need reliable ventilation, power and servicing. Potential owners should check the actual machinery hours, service history, spare-parts position and planned replacement schedule before assigning financial value to the yacht's quoted equipment list.
Northrop & Johnson states that European Union VAT has been paid on BLACK LEGEND. That may be an important feature for eligible buyers who intend to keep or cruise the yacht in European waters, but the associated documentation still requires professional verification. The listing also says the yacht is not for sale or charter to United States residents while in United States waters.
Tax and sale restrictions are separate from the new asking price. Ownership structure, registration, delivery location and compliance obligations may affect a transaction materially. Buyers should obtain independent legal and tax advice rather than presume that a broker's advertised VAT status resolves every question about their own intended use of the yacht.
The €3 million reduction places BLACK LEGEND at a different asking-price level without changing the underlying yacht. She remains a nearly fifty-metre Mangusta with four-engine performance, four guest cabins and a substantial programme of outdoor and entertainment amenities. The official Northrop & Johnson photographs show BLACK LEGEND herself underway, not a sistership or an artist's impression.
Interested buyers should request the latest specification and inventory, updated operating hours and service records, and an opportunity for independent inspections. It will also be important to establish whether any upcoming work is required before extended cruising. Until a completed sale is announced, the verifiable development is the reduction to €16,900,000 rather than an assertion that a transaction has occurred.
