Callegari Acquires Geniuss and Expands into the Superyacht Tender Market

Gommoni Callegari’s acquisition of Geniuss brings an established tender brand, production capability and patented outboard-stowage technology into its expanding Italian marine manufacturing programme.

Gommoni Callegari has expanded into the yacht-tender market through the acquisition of Geniuss, adding the company’s brand, production activities and patented technical system to its growing portfolio. The transaction moves Callegari beyond its recently relaunched range of RIBs and maxi-RIBs, giving the company an immediate position in the compact tender segment and a technical platform around which a new generation of lightweight carbon-fibre models is expected to be developed.

The acquisition is significant because it is not simply the purchase of another marine name. Geniuss has concentrated on a recurring practical problem aboard yachts: how to accommodate an outboard-powered tender within a garage, on a bathing platform or on a flybridge without allowing the engine leg and transom arrangement to consume unnecessary space. Its solution is a sliding and tilting outboard support that draws the motor into the tender’s overall footprint when it is stowed.

For Callegari, the deal offers a route into a part of the yacht market where engineering, packaging and weight are often more important than outright size. A tender may be a comparatively small vessel, but its dimensions can influence the design of a yacht garage, the operation of launching equipment and the amount of space available for other equipment. Bringing Geniuss into the Callegari organisation therefore adds a specialised product line that complements, rather than duplicates, the company’s larger leisure and performance boats.

More than an acquisition of the Geniuss name

Published details of the transaction state that Callegari has acquired the Geniuss brand, its production activities and the patented technology associated with its tender-stowage concept. This gives the buyer control of both an existing range and the underlying system that differentiates the boats from conventional outboard-powered tenders.

Geniuss describes its core invention as a sliding support for the outboard motor. Once the engine is tilted, the support allows it to move forward and inward, reducing the projection normally created by the motor leg behind the transom. The company says this arrangement also improves weight distribution during launching, recovery and navigation. Its deposited Italian patent is identified by Geniuss as number 000277200.

The principle has also been developed into an automated HTS arrangement on larger models. On the 330 HTS Cruiser and 420 HTS Cruiser, an electronic system controls the tilting of the outboard and its inward movement, reducing the manual effort required to prepare the tender for storage. The current Geniuss range includes compact open tenders as well as cruiser-style models, extending from boats of approximately 2.65 metres to the 4.2-metre HTS Cruiser.

These dimensions place the range directly within the operational environment of yacht garages and platform-mounted tenders. The acquisition consequently provides Callegari with technology that addresses a specific design constraint rather than merely adding another conventional small RIB to its catalogue.

Why tender stowage matters aboard larger yachts

Tender design is frequently judged by seating, power and performance, but the more difficult question is often what happens when the boat is not in use. On many yachts, the tender must fit inside a garage whose height and length have already been fixed by the mothership’s structure. A few centimetres saved around the outboard can determine whether the tender fits correctly, whether the garage door can close and whether launching equipment can operate without interference.

The Geniuss approach retains an outboard engine while reducing one of its principal packaging disadvantages. Outboards remain attractive because they are familiar, serviceable and relatively easy to replace, but they normally extend beyond the tender’s transom. By moving the tilted engine into the boat’s outline, the patented support attempts to combine the practical benefits of an outboard with a stowed footprint closer to that of a more integrated propulsion arrangement.

That distinction may become increasingly relevant as yacht designers attempt to use garage volume more efficiently. Owners now expect tenders to provide better seating, custom finishes and greater capability, while yacht builders are simultaneously allocating space to water toys, rescue equipment, dive stores and technical systems. A tender that occupies less length while retaining its normal operating dimensions can provide more flexibility in the overall arrangement.

The technology may also support customisation for yacht-specific installations. Tender garages vary considerably, and the value of the system will ultimately depend on how effectively Callegari can integrate it with different hull forms, lifting points, engine packages and storage geometries.

Carbon-fibre development becomes the next step

Callegari’s stated industrial direction gives some indication of how Geniuss may develop under its new ownership. The revived Callegari range already places substantial emphasis on advanced composites, infusion manufacturing, controlled post-curing, computer-machined tooling and CFD-assisted hull development. Its Callegari 48 uses a full-carbon structure, while the company presents aerospace-derived production knowledge as a central part of its renewed identity.

The Callegari relaunch followed the acquisition of the historic brand, assets and technical knowledge by Gruppo Industriale Recchia, whose Aviorec business operates in advanced aerospace and industrial composites. The company’s current leisure range includes the Callegari 48, Callegari 9 and Callegari 7, with further models expected during 2027.

Against that background, the proposal for a future carbon-fibre Geniuss range appears consistent with the wider industrial plan. Replacing or supplementing conventional glass-reinforced structures with carbon could reduce tender weight, provided that construction costs, impact resistance and repairability remain appropriate for everyday yacht use. Lower weight can benefit lifting systems, garage structures, fuel consumption and handling by crew, but a successful tender must also withstand frequent launching, beaching, contact with yacht platforms and intensive seasonal operation.

The acquisition gives Callegari an existing tender concept to which its composite-production capabilities can be applied. Rather than developing a compact tender platform entirely from the beginning, the company can work from a product family whose central stowage feature is already established in the market.

A broader role in the yacht supply chain

Callegari’s earlier relaunch centred on complete boats sold directly into the premium leisure market. Geniuss introduces a different commercial relationship: the tender may be selected by a yacht owner, captain, designer, shipyard or project manager as part of a much larger vessel programme. Success will therefore depend not only on styling and performance, but also on dimensional accuracy, delivery schedules, lifting arrangements, documentation and the ability to customise each boat around the mothership.

This could place Callegari closer to yacht builders and design studios at an earlier stage of the construction process. A tender selected during a new-build project may influence garage dimensions, crane capacity, service access and deck arrangements. The ability to offer both standardised platforms and custom solutions could consequently be more important than producing a large number of identical boats.

The acquisition also reflects a wider trend in which specialised marine technologies are being assembled within industrial groups capable of funding product development and controlling more of the manufacturing process. In this case, Geniuss contributes a focused tender concept and protected technical solution, while Callegari contributes composite engineering, production capacity and a broader international commercial programme.

Geniuss will now be judged on how effectively those elements are combined. The immediate value of the transaction lies in giving Callegari a credible entry into compact yacht tenders. Its longer-term importance will depend on whether the planned carbon-fibre range can preserve the practical advantages of the original stowage system while improving weight, finish and customisation for the superyacht market.
