Royal Huisman has detailed the engineering behind the 47-metre Nilaya, built for an owner who wanted worldwide cruising capability without giving up competitive sailing performance. The yacht also needed to remain fast in light winds so that engine use could be reduced.
Reichel Pugh and Nauta Design developed the project with owner representative MCM and the yard. The new yacht follows an earlier Nilaya but increases length, beam and interior volume substantially.
The owner wanted more space and greater comfort while also asking for a stiffer, quieter and faster yacht. Those goals can conflict because additional structure and equipment normally increase displacement.
Royal Huisman responded with a highly detailed weight-management programme and new construction methods. Aluminium structure, equipment placement and interior build techniques were reviewed as one system rather than as separate disciplines.
A lighter yacht accelerates more easily and can sail effectively in lower wind speeds. That gives owners more opportunity to travel under sail and reduces the number of hours when engines are needed for propulsion.
Nilaya therefore treats performance as part of operational efficiency rather than simply as a regatta goal. The project is a reference for how modern custom sailing yachts can use weight control to improve both speed and long-range cruising behaviour.
