50m VEGA Conversion Plans Recast Historic Icebreaker as Explorer Yacht

Damen Maaskant's 50m VEGA conversion in Stellendam aims to turn a 1964 Swedish icebreaking lighthouse-supply vessel into an ocean-capable explorer yacht.

A vessel with a working-ship past is being reimagined

VEGA, a roughly 50-metre former icebreaking lighthouse supply vessel, is the subject of an extensive conversion programme associated with Damen Maaskant Yacht Refit & Conversion in the Netherlands. Originally launched from Sweden's Asi yard in 1964, the ship had a working role very different from the private expedition yacht its new owners intend to create.

Turning a specialised workboat into a superyacht brings design opportunities unavailable to a conventional production platform. It also introduces challenges involving hull condition, structural arrangements, machinery, insulation and the large technical changes needed to accommodate residential interiors. The age and original purpose of the vessel make engineering documentation especially important.

The vessel has followed a long route towards conversion

Damen Maaskant says VEGA arrived at its Stellendam facility in January 2024 for the next stage of the project. More than two decades earlier, the ship had been acquired by a Swedish company and taken to Penzance Dry Dock in Cornwall with an explorer conversion already in mind. That history shows how a major transformation can extend across ownership arrangements and different yards.

Arrival at a specialist facility is not the same as completion. The work may involve stripping or adapting existing compartments, integrating modern hotel systems and reconciling residential demands with the structure retained from the ship's commercial service. The specific scope and completion date should be confirmed through the project team.

Explorer layouts involve very different priorities

An explorer yacht built from a former icebreaker may offer a strong underlying hull form, generous technical areas and an appearance rooted in genuine maritime history. Yet converting those attributes into comfortable guest spaces requires close attention to noise, vibration, access, daylight and emergency egress. Steel structure and watertight subdivision constrain what can be changed without further engineering.

Operational planning also determines how much capacity is reserved for tenders, provisions, stores and equipment supporting voyages far from ordinary leisure ports. An expedition aesthetic does not automatically confer ice-class capability or permission for polar operations after conversion. Such capabilities need independent verification under the new vessel's operating and classification arrangements.

The next stage depends on technical completion and trials

The Metstrade industry listing confirms VEGA's historic origin, the Stellendam move and the intention to create an explorer yacht. It does not substantiate a final interior specification, delivery date or maximum range following conversion. Those missing figures should not be filled in with estimates derived from the vessel's previous working life.

Owners and shipyards following VEGA should focus on structural surveys, engineering progress and the final approved scope. A successful conversion preserves useful elements of the original ship while meeting the safety and habitability expectations of contemporary yachting. The significance is the continuing transformation, not a claim that the project is already commissioned or available for charter.
