British Marine's online Training Academy has launched with an introductory course for people entering the wider marine industry and its supply chain.
British Marine formally launched its Training Academy at Southampton International Boat Show on 22 September 2026, establishing a digital platform for industry-led courses. The first available course, Introduction to the Marine World, is designed for newcomers as well as people changing careers or moving into a marine-related role.
The launch took place with course partner Clegg Gifford and founding supporters from marine insurance, surveying, marinas and legal services. That cross-sector involvement underlines how training needs extend well beyond boatbuilding and into the services used by yacht owners and operators.
The initial course covers the structure of the leisure marine sector, types of boats, marine terminology and an introduction to regulation, safe working and professional conduct. British Marine says it takes approximately two hours and requires no previous boating or marine-industry experience.
The course can support people in sales, marketing, administration, finance and customer service as well as early-career technical staff. Its purpose is to establish a common foundation, not to grant a vessel-operating certificate or replace specialist engineering qualifications.
The Academy's official course partner is Clegg Gifford, while founding partners include Haven Knox-Johnston Commercial, Skandinavian Agency Services, Aqueduct Marina and Bartons Solicitors. British Marine says further learning is in development across technical skills, compliance, leadership and innovation.
The initial online course is advertised from £99 excluding VAT, with member discounts described by the association. Individual businesses should check the current price and course content before enrolling staff, particularly when planning a wider internal training programme.
Superyacht businesses employ teams whose expertise ranges from engineering and onboard operations to commercial administration and specialist support. A shared introductory course may help new entrants understand how those activities interact before progressing to more specific training.
British Marine is inviting suggestions for future course subjects as the portfolio develops. The launch is a concrete education initiative, while the longer-term programme will depend on courses subsequently produced and made available.
