METSTRADE's DAME Design Awards has named 74 product nominees for 2026, ahead of its jury awards and November Amsterdam trade-show showcase.

Marine Equipment Design Shortlist Confirmed

METSTRADE has announced the shortlisted nominees for the 2026 DAME Design Awards, its longstanding competition recognising design in marine equipment. In a release dated 26 October, the Amsterdam trade-show organiser says the international jury selected 74 nominated products from 153 entries submitted from 30 countries. This is a shortlist, not the announcement of overall or category winners. The 35th-anniversary edition will reach its award ceremony on the opening day of METSTRADE in November.

The competition spans equipment used in leisure boating and superyachting, so the results matter beyond the appearance of individual products. A well-designed component must work for the user, fit its intended application and be supported by engineering and manufacturing choices. The release records the judges' selection process but does not certify that every nominee is the best option for every yacht.

Jury Reviews Products in Person

The official account describes a process beginning with several weeks of online assessment, followed by two days of hands-on judging at a dedicated facility in RAI Amsterdam. Eleven design and user experts formed the international jury, allowing products to be considered from different professional perspectives. Physical review is especially relevant for marine equipment because ergonomics, finish, controls and service access can be difficult to judge from a catalogue image alone.

Two guest jury members brought additional viewpoints: Yachting World test editor Toby Hodges and technical-design student Leonie von Baeyer, from Deggendorf Institute of Technology in Germany. The organiser presents them as part of the wider evaluation team, not as the authors of individual product tests published in the release. Readers should avoid attributing a specific nomination to either guest without a separate jury record.

Design Priorities Seen by the Jury

Jury chair Andre Hoek identifies sustainability, electrification, automation, artificial intelligence and connected systems among the areas represented in this year's entries. These themes are relevant to yacht projects as designers integrate power generation, onboard controls, communication and equipment interfaces. Hoek also notes innovation in equipment categories that may look mature, where improvements in usability and construction can matter as much as a completely novel technical concept.

The themes are observations from judging, not an independent audit showing how quickly those technologies are being adopted across the superyacht fleet. An AI-labelled product, for example, still needs careful evaluation of what it actually does and how it responds to faults. Similarly, an electrification claim should be interpreted within a vessel's power-management architecture.

A Public Showcase at RAI Amsterdam

METSTRADE says the nominated products will be displayed in the DAME Design Awards showcase in the Elicium, Hall 13, during the exhibition from 17 to 19 November 2026. This offers industry professionals an opportunity to encounter candidate equipment directly rather than relying only on marketing releases. The awards ceremony is scheduled for the trade show's opening day, with detailed results to follow in the official jury report.

The physical showcase helps designers, shipyard buyers and technical managers compare approaches to practical challenges. Seeing multiple products in one place can reveal differences in user interface, size and intended installation. It cannot substitute for reviewing compliance documentation, integration requirements and support arrangements in a real yacht project. A display demonstrates the product and the designers' intent; suitability for a specific vessel remains a separate engineering and procurement decision.

Award Categories and Final Selection

Category winners will be chosen from the nominated products across eight award categories, after which the jury selects an overall DAME Design Award winner from that group. The judging programme also allows Special Mentions and an Environmental Design Award at the jury's discretion. The distinction between a nominee, category winner and overall winner is central to reporting the October announcement accurately. Those honours have not yet been conferred in the public release.

The awards recognise design quality and innovation rather than promising a measurable improvement in every possible use case. The jury's criteria can make a product worth investigating, but they do not change a ship's electrical installation rules or safety requirements. Yacht owners may regard a nomination as an introduction to new technology, while shipyards must still request appropriate documentation and carry out project-specific reviews.

Sustainability Training Offered to Nominees

This year's nominated companies have been invited to a new fast-track sustainability training programme on 16 November, the afternoon before METSTRADE opens. The Marine Impact Lab will run the session with The Sustainability Toolbox and MarineShift 360, according to the organiser. Workshops and expert guidance are intended to help companies consider and communicate the environmental aspects of their products.

The training invitation is a development worth following because environmental claims around marine equipment can be difficult to compare. Material selection, repairability, energy use and end-of-life handling may be relevant to different products, but one claim cannot represent every aspect of an environmental footprint. The event is an educational opportunity for nominated businesses; its impact will depend on whether lessons translate into better designs and verifiable information supplied to owners and builders.

Anniversary Programme and Beneficiary

The DAME Design Awards were established in 1991, and the organiser is marking the competition's 35th anniversary with additional events. METSTRADE plans a hall-of-fame installation featuring overall winners from previous editions, while an anniversary panel on 17 November will explore the idea that good design goes beyond visual appearance. Participants are scheduled to include designer Tony Castro, academic Arjen Jansen and awards secretary Kim Hollamby. These are programme announcements, not completed sessions.

METSTRADE also says entry fees from this year's competition will be donated to KNRM, the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution. This connects the design event with a maritime safety organisation, although the release does not state the final donation total. The associated charitable purpose does not affect product certification or the status of a nomination. It belongs to the competition's wider programme, alongside the displays, workshops and planned presentation of prizes.

What Superyacht Readers Should Watch

The immediate verified position is that a record-sized pool of entries has yielded a 74-product shortlist assessed by a specialist jury, with winners still to be announced on 17 November. Superyacht designers and captains can follow the eventual category results for ideas worth deeper technical scrutiny. The event offers an organised view of emerging equipment thinking, especially in systems integration and energy-related design, without presenting an untested award entry as a ready-made solution.

For Superyacht Guide, this is technology and industry-event news rather than a launch of a particular yacht. The October announcement establishes who is shortlisted, how judging has progressed and when the next milestone is scheduled. Product winners and the detailed jury rationale should be reported once METSTRADE publishes its final report. Keeping that sequence clear preserves the difference between an early nomination, the judges' ultimate choices and a product's later performance at sea.
