The 29.26m Sparkman & Stephens-designed sailing yacht ALTAIR enters an announced November auction following extensive mechanical, rigging and deck upgrades.

A pedigree sailing yacht with two routes to market

Northrop & Johnson has announced that the 29.26-metre Derecktor sailing yacht ALTAIR is available for sale and will be offered through a November online auction. The broker advertises a conventional asking price of US$995,000, while describing an opening auction bid of US$400,000. These are different mechanisms, and the opening figure should not be mistaken for either an expected final sale price or a guaranteed purchase opportunity.

The American-built yacht was designed by Sparkman & Stephens and constructed in aluminium. Her pedigree is notable because her owner is acquiring a genuinely substantial cruising sailing yacht rather than a lightweight day-sailing design. Northrop & Johnson identifies Elizabeth Swain and Hank Halsted as the representatives involved in the brokerage offering, with Boathouse Auctions handling the competitive sale format.

The scheduled live online bidding date is 19 November 2026, with a viewing period that began on 21 October. Serious bidders should review the auction terms, buyer fees, title position and the conditions under which a bid becomes binding. An appealing opening bid does not remove the need for marine survey, independent technical advice or careful consideration of the cost of owning a yacht of this size.

Recent technical investment is central to the story

The brokerage says ALTAIR underwent important work in 2026, including a rebuilding of her Caterpillar main engine, replacement rod rigging, refreshed hull paint and varnish, and new rudder seals and bearings. These are meaningful areas for an offshore sailing vessel because propulsion, steering and standing rigging are mission-critical systems. The scope of completed work should nevertheless be established from invoices and inspection records.

Northrop & Johnson also identifies teak-deck work in 2021 and an upgrade to the steering system in 2025. Navigation equipment and onboard connectivity have received attention, including Starlink capability. These improvements may support practical cruising, but a purchaser should establish what remains under warranty and distinguish recent repairs from equipment nearing its next scheduled service.

ALTAIR is promoted with a 2,400-nautical-mile range under power and an efficient sail plan intended for long passages. Such figures depend on conditions and assumptions about speed and reserve fuel; they are not promises that every voyage can be completed without a stop. An independent passage plan must consider crew experience, weather routing, fuel capacity and the actual condition of the rig.

Racing history and the owner experience

The yacht has a record of class success in events including the St Barths Bucket and Candy Store Cup. This is a useful part of her history, but it is not evidence that her current race inventory or ratings remain identical to those used in earlier competitions. Owners who hope to race should examine the present sail wardrobe, deck gear and the requirements of the events they wish to enter.

Below decks, the brokerage describes six-guest accommodation in three ensuite cabins, a traditional wood-finished saloon and a covered cockpit suited to social cruising. A folding swim platform and hydraulic transom steps add access to the water when conditions permit. These arrangements suggest a vessel intended to be lived aboard for more than an occasional regatta weekend.

Sailing superyachts place particular demands on crew and guests during passage. Life at an angle of heel, watchkeeping, weather changes and movement through companionways are different from the rhythm of a motor yacht. A prospective buyer should assess those operational realities during a sea trial rather than judging the boat solely through photographs of calm anchorages.

The diligence required before 19 November

With a defined auction date, potential buyers have a relatively narrow period to obtain technical details and professional advice. The right sequence is to collect survey records, review available yacht documentation, commission any further examination permitted by the terms and calculate the full acquisition cost. Insurance availability and flag registration should be evaluated before a final bid is placed.

The announcement refers to the yacht as maintained and ready for extended voyages, but that is a marketing description from the selling broker. It is sensible to verify engine performance, structural condition, hull coatings, spars, electrical systems and the rig before treating the refit history as a substitute for a current condition report. The buyer should also clarify whether any significant spares or ancillary equipment are included.

ALTAIR is therefore newsworthy for the combination of her sailing pedigree, documented recent investment and the unusual auction path for a yacht above 24 metres. The US$995,000 asking price and US$400,000 bid starting point establish the advertised terms today. What the vessel ultimately sells for will only become clear through the process itself, and should not be anticipated as a confirmed result.
