Feadship’s AURORA artificial-intelligence research initiative has received Dutch maritime innovation funding for CFD-driven hull resistance prediction and optimisation.
Feadship’s AURORA research initiative has received funding from Nederland Maritiem Land through the Maritime Innovation Impulse Programme. The award formally starts a programme dedicated to exploring how artificial intelligence can support future yacht-design workflows.
Feadship describes AURORA as its first subsidised initiative focused entirely on AI. The work is intended to complement established naval-architecture methods rather than replace engineering judgement with an automated design process.
At the centre of AURORA is a planned programme of roughly 3,500 high-fidelity computational fluid-dynamics simulations. Those results will create a structured data set that can be used to train AI models for hull-resistance prediction and optimisation.
Generating the data at high fidelity is important because yacht hulls operate across complex combinations of speed, displacement and geometry. Feadship wants the resulting models to accelerate exploration of design options while preserving the accuracy expected from conventional hydrodynamic analysis.
If the research succeeds, designers may be able to evaluate promising hull directions earlier before committing the most computationally expensive analysis to every option. That could make iterative design faster while still requiring detailed CFD and physical validation at later stages.
The programme places Feadship within a wider maritime push toward data-driven engineering. For custom yachts, where every hull can begin from a different brief, tools that shorten early prediction cycles could have particular value without turning projects into standardised products.
