Ferrari Hypersail has selected Livorno for the operational base supporting development and sea trials of its 100-foot foiling monohull, using facilities provided by Azimut Yachts.

Ferrari Hypersail has established a dedicated operational base in Livorno for the next phase of development of its 100-foot foiling monohull. The facility, located in spaces provided by Azimut Yachts, brings the project’s engineering, shore-team and sea-trial activities together beside the Tyrrhenian Sea while maintaining relatively close links with Ferrari’s technical departments in Maranello.

Livorno chosen for direct access to varied sea conditions

Ferrari says the new base was selected in part because Livorno provides direct access to the Tyrrhenian Sea and a useful range of sea and weather conditions for a structured test programme. That is particularly relevant to a foiling project whose development depends on repeated measurement of hull, foil, control-system and crew performance in changing real-world conditions.

The location also shortens the practical link between the waterfront programme and Ferrari’s engineering and design teams in Maranello. Project leader Enrico Voltolini described the combination of suitable sea access and proximity to the company’s technical organisation as a way to accelerate the innovation process as the yacht moves toward more intensive testing.

Engineering, shore operations and training are being brought together

The Livorno facility is intended to house offices for the project team, engineers and shore crew alongside fitness and athletic-preparation areas. Technical spaces include laboratories for hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems as well as 3D-printing capability, giving the team a base where components and systems can be worked on close to the boat.

For a highly experimental 100-foot yacht, concentrating technical and operational functions in one location can reduce the delay between a sea-trial observation and the next engineering response. The base will also act as a meeting point for project partners and guests as the programme advances.

Ferrari Design Studio shaped the new facility

The building was designed by Ferrari Design Studio under chief design officer Flavio Manzoni. Its exterior uses the Grigio Hypersail and Giallo Fly colours associated with the yacht, while the roof carries the outline of the vessel and the entrance includes a technical representation of the bow.

The architecture is therefore being used as part of the wider project identity rather than as a purely functional workshop. Ferrari describes the approach as another example of design and engineering disciplines being brought together around the Hypersail programme.

Azimut partnership extends from the base to the water

The Livorno base forms part of a broader collaboration between Ferrari Hypersail and Azimut Yachts. Azimut is also developing a heavily modified Fly 72 to support the programme, including early tow testing before the foiling yacht begins its full sailing-test phase.

During subsequent trials the support boat is expected to assist with monitoring and operational support, while also providing space for crew and guests. Taken together, the shore base and dedicated support yacht give Ferrari Hypersail a more complete testing infrastructure as the 100-foot project progresses toward sea trials.
