Ferretti Group Adopts WATCHIT SENSE 360 Radar Collision System

Ferretti Group has announced the exclusive adoption of WATCHIT SENSE 360, a new collision-avoidance system that combines navigation data, AIS, artificial intelligence and radar detection. Developed by Aqua Marina Tech, the system adds 360-degree radar awareness through integration with Simrad multifunction displays and HALO radar equipment already used on board.

The move builds on Ferretti Group’s earlier use of WATCHIT technology and expands the system beyond chart and AIS-based monitoring. The new generation is designed to identify hazards that may not appear through AIS alone, including vessels with AIS switched off, buoys, floating objects and other obstacles.

Radar adds a third layer of detection

The original WATCHIT system cross-referenced digital charts with the yacht’s position and course, creating a first layer of collision and grounding awareness. AIS was later incorporated to extend that monitoring to surrounding maritime traffic broadcasting identification and movement data.

WATCHIT SENSE 360 adds radar as a third source of information. By combining the radar picture with chart, AIS and navigation data, the system can build a broader view of what is around the yacht rather than relying on any one source.

Detecting targets that AIS can miss

AIS is valuable for identifying equipped vessels, but it cannot represent every potential collision hazard. Ferretti Group says the new system can detect boats that are not transmitting AIS as well as buoys, floating objects and other radar-visible obstacles.

That is particularly relevant in congested coastal waters and harbour approaches, where small craft and fixed or floating hazards may be close to the yacht. Radar integration also gives the system an independent sensor source when electronic identification data is incomplete or absent.

AI filters risk before alerting the bridge

The software continuously evaluates the level of risk around the yacht and produces visual and audible warnings when it identifies a genuine hazard. Ferretti Group says the intention is to keep the system working in the background without creating unnecessary distraction for the skipper or crew.

The design therefore focuses not just on detecting objects but on deciding which contacts require attention. Combining several data sources allows the software to compare the yacht’s movement with surrounding targets before presenting an alert.

Automatic operation across different conditions

WATCHIT SENSE 360 is designed to adapt automatically between open sea, congested waters, harbour areas and anchoring situations. Ferretti Group says this does not require the crew to make manual mode changes as the yacht moves between different operating environments.

The adoption gives Ferretti Group another integrated safety technology across its portfolio and deepens its collaboration with specialist suppliers. It also reflects a wider trend towards bridge systems that combine traditional marine sensors with software-based risk assessment rather than treating radar, AIS and electronic charts as isolated sources.
