Garmin’s SmartDrive autopilot combines a brushless linear actuator, built-in ECU and rudder feedback for sailboats and catamarans up to 45 feet.
Garmin has introduced SmartDrive, a sailboat autopilot actuator that combines a brushless linear drive, built-in electronic control unit and rudder feedback sensor. The integrated architecture is intended to reduce the number of separate components and cables normally required around an autopilot installation.
The Reactor 40 Corepack with SmartDrive is designed for sailboats and catamarans up to 45 feet and a maximum displacement of 33,000 pounds. Garmin quotes up to 1,050 pounds of maximum thrust, giving the system enough authority for demanding offshore steering within its specified vessel range.
SmartDrive uses a form factor similar to conventional linear actuators, allowing installers to consider it as a direct replacement in suitable existing layouts. Fewer external control components can simplify wiring, reduce installation time and leave more flexibility in machinery or steering spaces.
The actuator integrates with compatible Garmin multifunction displays over NMEA 2000 and can be used with the company’s Reactor 40 sailing autopilot system. Owners can buy the actuator separately or as part of a corepack that includes heading control and autopilot display hardware.
The complete Reactor 40 package supports wind hold, controlled tacking and gybing, adjustable manoeuvre speeds and guided dockside calibration. The system can also be controlled through selected Garmin remotes, keypads and compatible marine smartwatches when paired with the required onboard equipment.
For sailing-yacht owners, the significance is less about adding another display and more about reducing the hardware burden behind the steering system. SmartDrive brings mechanical actuation, control electronics and feedback into a more consolidated package while retaining familiar network integration.
