Garmin’s Spy Pole pairs motorised LiveScope control with 360-degree sonar, GPS-stabilised imaging and wireless control for compact marine platforms.

A motorised pole changes how live sonar is aimed

Garmin’s Spy Pole separates live-sonar aiming from the trolling motor by placing the transducer on a dedicated motorised pole that can be steered independently. The system works with Garmin LiveScope transducers and can be controlled from a wireless foot pedal, gesture remote or a compatible chartplotter, giving the operator several ways to direct the sonar beam.

That independence is the central idea behind the product because a boat can remain on one heading while the sonar looks elsewhere. For tenders and specialist chase boats, the same principle can improve underwater awareness around structure, moorings or operating areas without forcing the vessel itself to turn whenever the operator wants another view.

GT360UHD adds a full-circle picture

Garmin pairs Spy Pole with the GT360UHD transducer to create a 360-degree scanning sonar view in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional presentations. OneVü imaging can build a bird’s-eye picture around the boat, while True Motion uses GPS information to keep underwater features correctly positioned as the vessel moves around them.

The system stores a continuously updated area of sonar imagery so users can retain context instead of starting a new scan every time the boat changes position. That is primarily aimed at fishing, but the underlying ability to maintain a spatial picture beneath and around a small craft has wider relevance to survey, diving and support-boat operations.

LiveScope control becomes more precise

SpyLock allows a LiveScope transducer to stay trained on a selected point, while SpyScan can sweep automatically to search an area. Garmin also routes transducer cabling through the pole shaft, which protects the cable and keeps the installation tidier than an exposed moving lead around a frequently handled deck system.

The pole can be mounted to compatible Force trolling motors or a separate gunnel mount and uses a quick-release arrangement for removal. That flexibility is useful on a tender where deck hardware may need to be cleared quickly for guest use, transport or another mission rather than remaining permanently deployed.

Integration reduces separate control hardware

Garmin lets users command the system through compatible chartplotters and can synchronise Spy Pole movement with a Force Pro trolling motor through SpyLink. When the trolling motor is holding position, the operator can still direct the sonar independently, which is the kind of integration that reduces the number of separate control routines a crew member must learn.

The 360-degree package is offered with 42-inch and 49-inch pole options, reflecting the different freeboard and mounting arrangements found on small craft. The installation remains specialised equipment, but its networked control philosophy is consistent with the wider move toward consolidating multiple sensors on common helm interfaces.

Underwater situational awareness is becoming more accessible

High-resolution live sonar was once associated with specialist fishing or survey equipment, but systems such as Spy Pole are bringing more dynamic underwater imaging into compact boats. The technology still needs an operator who understands what the image represents, yet it can give crews faster feedback than relying only on charted depth and conventional sounder traces.

For a superyacht owner, the most likely applications sit away from the main yacht on tenders, chase boats and activity craft rather than on the primary bridge. Even so, the development is relevant because increasingly capable sensors are moving into smaller platforms, allowing the yacht’s support fleet to operate with a richer picture of the environment around it.
