Andrew Parkinson, with extensive experience in yacht brokerage and marine publishing, joins IYBA to lead its strategic direction.

Leadership Transition and Strategic Direction

Andrew Parkinson has been appointed as executive director of the International Yacht Brokers Association (IYBA), bringing his extensive experience in yacht brokerage and marine publishing to the role. The appointment was confirmed by IYBA’s official staff page, which lists Parkinson as the association’s executive director, based at its headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Parkinson’s career has spanned multiple facets of the yachting industry, including roles as a licensed yacht broker and dealer with Merritt Yacht Brokers and Denison Yachting. His background also includes editorial leadership positions at prominent marine publications such as Cruising World, Passagemaker, Yachts International, and Southern Boating. These roles have equipped him with a deep understanding of the industry’s operational and communicative needs.

IYBA’s Vision and Digital Transformation

As executive director, Parkinson will work closely with IYBA’s board and staff to support the association’s mission of promoting professionalism and cooperation among yacht brokers. The association’s code of ethics, which members must follow, is designed to protect the public against fraud, misrepresentation, or unethical practices in brokerage transactions. This framework is central to IYBA’s role in maintaining industry standards and fostering trust among its members.

Parkinson’s appointment comes at a time when IYBA is expanding its digital services and member benefits. His experience in leading editorial and brand strategies, including overseeing the transition of Cruising World from print to a multichannel business, positions him well to guide the association’s evolving digital offerings. His background in both brokerage and publishing also aligns with IYBA’s dual focus on industry representation and information dissemination.

According to IYBA’s chief operating officer, Paul Flannery, Parkinson’s appointment is a strategic move to strengthen the association’s support for its members. “I am delighted to welcome Andrew to the role of IYBA executive director and look forward to working with him as we continue to expand our association’s many valuable tools and benefits for members and the industry as a whole,” Flannery said. This statement underscores the importance of Parkinson’s role in enhancing IYBA’s services and relevance to its growing membership.

Industry Relevance and Superyacht Implications

Parkinson’s personal connection to the yachting industry is evident in his early experiences. He grew up on the southern Connecticut shoreline, where he learned to sail 420s and Flying Juniors through his high school sailing club. His family also spent time cruising the Long Island Sound aboard a Hunter 31. These formative experiences have shaped his understanding of the industry’s culture and its importance to both professionals and enthusiasts.

As he begins his role, Parkinson has expressed confidence in IYBA’s position to support brokers in navigating the industry’s rapid changes. “The yachting industry is changing quickly, and I think IYBA is well placed to help brokers everywhere meet that change,” he said. This sentiment reflects his commitment to guiding the association into its next chapter, with a focus on collaboration and growth for its members.
