Pantaenius Details Rapid Response to Marina Zea Yacht Total-Loss Claim

Pantaenius has published a detailed claims case study showing how survey, salvage and environmental coordination brought a complex Marina Zea yacht total loss to settlement.

Pantaenius has published a case study of the response to a 77-foot motor yacht lost in the November 2025 Marina Zea fire in Greece. The insurer uses the case to show how rapid survey attendance, salvage coordination and early documentation can shorten a complicated total-loss process involving several sunken vessels, local authorities and environmental controls.

Four yachts were lost in one marina fire

The fire began in the early hours of 13 November 2025 and spread quickly between neighbouring yachts moored in Marina Zea. Four vessels ultimately sank, including the Pantaenius-insured 77-foot motor yacht, creating a multi-vessel wreck site that required both claims handling and environmental management.

Anti-pollution booms were deployed around the wrecks while authorities assessed the scene and salvage options. Because another sunken yacht had come to rest directly on top of the insured vessel, recovery of that upper wreck had to take place before the insured yacht could be lifted.

A surveyor was onsite within 24 hours

Pantaenius says the claim was reported on the morning of 13 November and its team immediately instructed Marine Claims Service together with local survey specialists. An experienced surveyor reached Marina Zea at 8 a.m. the following day, placing technical representation onsite less than 24 hours after notification.

Early attendance allowed survey work, communication with authorities and salvage planning to begin while the incident was still developing. In complex marine losses, delays at this stage can increase storage, pollution, contractor and coordination costs while also making evidence and documentation harder to assemble.

Salvage required a carefully sequenced recovery

The first wreck obstructing the insured yacht was recovered between 28 and 30 November, clearing the way for the next phase. A salvage agreement for the insured vessel was finalised on 3 December after negotiations over cost and contractual arrangements, and the yacht itself was lifted three days later.

The recovered vessel was transported to a shipyard for disposal, bringing the physical part of the operation to an end. By organising surveys and documentation in parallel with salvage, the claims team was able to progress the financial settlement without waiting for every physical task to finish before paperwork began.

Settlement followed in under two months

Pantaenius says the total-loss claim was fully settled on 9 January 2026, less than two months after the fire. The insurer presents the case as evidence of the value of combining an in-house claims team with local surveyors, salvage specialists and an international marine-service network.

For yacht owners and managers, the wider lesson is that insurance response after a serious casualty depends on more than policy wording alone. Access to survey expertise, pollution management, contractors and decision-makers can materially influence how quickly an incident moves from emergency response to recovery and final settlement.
