PredictWind introduces a man-overboard warning system that links supported crew phones and watches to DataHub Pro, providing escalating alerts and a last-known-location record.
PredictWind has introduced a Man Overboard application intended to help a yacht's crew identify and react when a person may have fallen into the water. The system connects supported phones and wearable devices to the manufacturer's DataHub Pro communications hub, using their relationship with the vessel's onboard network as a trigger for an emergency workflow.
For superyacht captains, the attraction lies in adding another source of awareness when a crewmember works on an exposed foredeck, moves around a tender station or crosses an open afterdeck. The technology does not replace visual supervision, personal flotation equipment or established man-overboard drills, and it should be regarded as an additional warning layer rather than a guarantee of rescue.
The company's system is designed to identify a potentially serious loss of connection between an enrolled device and the onboard hub. When conditions suggest a possible man-overboard event, it can start alerts that are communicated to the person's device and then to others aboard, with information intended to help the bridge team establish a starting point for search and recovery.
That distinction between a suspected incident and a confirmed person in the water matters. Radio interference, a flat battery or simply leaving a device behind may have a different cause from a genuine emergency, so a crew should understand how notifications work before relying on them operationally.
PredictWind's published material identifies DataHub Pro as a central requirement, together with a suitable subscription and supported phone or watch arrangements. A yacht adopting the product needs to check device compatibility, account configuration, local connectivity and the implications of its own wireless coverage before treating the system as ready for service.
The developer also describes options for extending information beyond the yacht when a suitable internet connection is present. Shore notification is valuable for communications but must be distinguished from immediate bridge alarms, which are the more urgent requirement when a person is in the water close to the vessel.
A large yacht presents particular challenges because working spaces can be spread over several decks, and steel structures, tender garages and machinery areas may create inconsistent wireless reception. Before deploying a connectivity-based alert system, the master and safety officer should test its behaviour at the actual embarkation ladders, working decks and tender-handling locations where crew exposure is greatest.
The manufacturer's introduction is relevant to yacht managers evaluating electronic safety aids, but it is not evidence that a particular installation has passed class, flag or operational acceptance. Clear accountability, prompt crew response and regular man-overboard drills remain essential even where an electronic alert provides an earlier warning.
