Royal Huisman has detailed how full-scale mockups are used to test ergonomics, layouts and owner decisions before construction begins.
Royal Huisman has outlined how full-scale mockups are still used during custom-yacht development despite advances in virtual reality and 3D modelling. Owners may request anything from a helm station to large sections of a cabin or exterior deck.
The aim is to experience dimensions and ergonomics before permanent materials are cut or structural decisions become difficult to reverse. A few centimetres of clearance can feel very different in person from what appears comfortable on a screen.
Large mockups allow owners, designers, engineers and craftsmen to stand inside the same temporary space and discuss specific features in context. Changes can then be made rapidly before those decisions affect finished joinery, structure or equipment locations.
Royal Huisman says this process has helped identify issues that might otherwise have appeared only after installation. The temporary structure becomes a practical decision-making tool rather than a presentation model.
Building a mockup adds time and cost at an early stage, but the yard argues that this investment can prevent much more expensive alterations later. It also gives owners confidence in spaces they may use for decades.
The continued use of full-scale models shows that digital design has not eliminated the value of physical experience. In custom yacht building, the most effective process often combines virtual tools with real-world testing before final construction begins.
