Royal Huisman has set out its view of the future for very large sailing yachts, drawing on current builds, ready-to-build studies and earlier projects.
Royal Huisman is arguing that the next generation of very large sailing yachts can offer owners more than scale alone. The yard points to completed and under-construction yachts as proof that large size can coexist with genuine sailing capability.
Ready-to-build studies such as SKY and TRIDENT sit alongside concepts including APEX 850, LOTUS and WING100. Together they show how different rig types and design philosophies can be adapted to yachts operating at the upper end of the sailing market.
The yard says advances in naval architecture and sailing systems are reducing some of the compromises traditionally associated with large sailing yachts. Modern solutions can limit heel, simplify sail handling and improve the transition between sailing and motoring.
Owners can therefore retain the social spaces and long-range comfort associated with large motor yachts while gaining the experience of travelling under sail. Royal Huisman also emphasises the efficiency advantage of using wind power for a meaningful part of a yacht’s propulsion.
Large custom yachts create engineering knowledge that can be reused without turning future vessels into copies. Structural analysis, rig integration, energy management and crew workflows all benefit from data gathered on earlier builds.
Royal Huisman’s position is that this accumulated experience makes larger sailing yachts increasingly realistic rather than increasingly experimental. The yard expects future projects to build on that foundation while remaining visually and operationally individual.
