The first Sunreef 100 Eco, Ipharra, will combine private family cruising with student educational voyages focused on the sea and environment.

Ipharra continues an owner’s education-at-sea programme

The first Sunreef 100 Eco, Ipharra, has entered service with a role extending beyond private family cruising. The owner intends to use the 28.65-metre sailing catamaran for student educational voyages in both the Mediterranean and Caribbean, continuing a programme associated with an earlier yacht of the same name.

The previous Ipharra, a Sunreef 102 Double Deck delivered in 2010, also hosted learning experiences at sea. The new yacht is expected to support subjects including geography, history, marine biology and ocean conservation, combining practical time onboard with the wider educational programme of Le Rosey in Switzerland.

Electric propulsion and solar support the new platform

Ipharra uses Sunreef’s Eco technology package, combining electric propulsion with integrated solar generation across the yacht’s structure. The system is designed to reduce generator use and support quieter periods under sail or at anchor, while preserving the space and guest capacity expected from a large cruising catamaran.

The owner’s brief therefore connects two forms of long-term use: lower-impact cruising technology and repeated educational voyages. Rather than treating sustainability as a purely technical specification, the operating programme gives students direct exposure to navigation, marine environments and life aboard a modern sailing yacht.

Owner purpose is shaping yacht use more visibly

Superyachts are increasingly being used for scientific, conservation, educational and philanthropic programmes alongside private cruising. Catamarans can be particularly suited to these roles because their broad decks and interior volume create flexible spaces for groups, equipment and teaching activities.

Ipharra remains a private family yacht, but its planned student voyages show how an owner can build a wider purpose into the annual operating schedule. The project also gives Sunreef’s electric and solar systems a high-visibility role in a programme where environmental education is part of the yacht’s actual use rather than only its marketing story.
