Royal Huisman has detailed how the 60-metre sailing yacht Sarissa uses diesel-electric propulsion, batteries and efficiency measures to reduce energy demand.
Royal Huisman has detailed the environmental and energy strategy developed for the 60-metre sailing yacht Sarissa. The owners asked the team to reduce fossil-fuel demand while improving performance and onboard experience.
The approach begins with the yacht’s ability to sail efficiently under wind power, but extends into the machinery and hotel systems used when generators are required. Energy demand was therefore considered across the whole vessel rather than through one headline technology.
Sarissa uses a diesel-electric installation with variable-speed generators and a 380kWh battery power block. Royal Huisman says most hotel and propulsion demand can be managed through the DC grid with generators operating only when needed.
Variable generator speed helps keep engines closer to efficient load points instead of forcing them to run continuously at poor utilisation. Stored energy can also supply propulsion, bow thruster and much of the sail-handling equipment.
The battery system gives Sarissa periods of emission-free propulsion and sailing support. Electric motors are also used to drive hydraulic pumps when those systems are required, reducing the need for continuously running conventional power packs.
The yacht demonstrates how large sailing vessels can combine renewable propulsion from wind with sophisticated electrical architecture. Royal Huisman presents the result as an example of efficiency gains that improve both environmental performance and the quality of life on board.
