AkzoNobel Opens Hamburg Yacht Paint Application Center

AkzoNobel has opened a new Yacht Paint Application Center in Hamburg, expanding its technical training network for professional yacht coating work. The facility is aimed at applicators, distributors, designers, contractors, boatbuilders and refit yards working with the company’s Awlgrip and International product ranges.

The Hamburg centre is intended to serve customers across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. It joins existing AkzoNobel yacht-paint training facilities in North America, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Hands-on application and repair training

Training covers preparation, priming, filling, topcoat application, maintenance and repair of yacht paint systems. The programme is designed to combine product knowledge with practical techniques that can be transferred directly to new-build and refit work.

For superyacht yards, the value of this type of facility is consistency across increasingly complex coating systems and large painted surfaces. Better application control can reduce rework and help teams diagnose finish defects before they become expensive yard-period problems.

Virtual spray simulation

The centre includes AkzoNobel’s virtual-reality spray-gun simulation, allowing applicators to practise technique without consuming coating material. The system gives trainees a controlled environment in which spray distance, overlap and movement can be assessed before live product application.

That approach also reduces waste during training and allows repeatable exercises for different skill levels. AkzoNobel says the wider programme will cover technology and more sustainable working practices alongside conventional application methods.

Support for builders and refit yards

Hamburg adds another northern European point of contact for yards and subcontractors using premium yacht coatings. The location is particularly relevant to builders, refit businesses and marine contractors operating around Germany and neighbouring Central European markets.

The centre also gives product specialists a place to run workshops, demonstrations and application trials closer to customers. For owners and project managers, the practical effect should be a larger pool of applicators trained on the same preparation, application and repair standards.
