Amer Yachts is linking access to financing to verified ESG indicators through a programme involving BPER Banca and RINA.
Amer Yachts has entered the BPER Sustainable Finance Lab in a programme that brings together a shipyard, a bank and an independent technical assurance company. BPER Banca will consider financing arrangements linked to defined environmental, social and governance indicators, while RINA is involved in assessing and monitoring the evidence of progress.
Unlike a conventional marketing statement about sustainability, this arrangement is designed to require records. That difference is important in the superyacht sector, where environmental claims can refer to very different things: emissions from an operating yacht, impacts from construction materials, energy consumed in a shipyard or the business practices of the company that builds the vessel.
RINA is a classification and technical assurance organisation, and the programme uses its SAFE platform to organise relevant documentation. The indicators identified publicly include lower-impact materials, certification, cybersecurity governance and training for employees.
The fact that RINA is involved does not mean that every Amer yacht is newly certified for low emissions or that a zero-carbon vessel has been produced. The subject here is the shipyard's corporate performance against agreed benchmarks, which must be assessed separately from technical certification of an individual hull or propulsion system.
For a yacht builder, investment decisions can involve workshop equipment, staff training, digital systems, materials purchasing and capacity for future orders. When a bank ties financial conditions to verified performance, those improvements become part of the firm's financing strategy rather than isolated internal projects.
The terms of individual credit arrangements and the achieved performance figures have not been reported in the announcement. It would therefore be premature to calculate the amount of money Amer might save or claim that the agreed targets have already been met.
Large custom yachts bring together machinery, electronics, glazing, structural materials, interiors and extensive specialist subcontracting. Changes to procurement processes can affect waste, supplier oversight and the traceability of components, even if the vessel's eventual cruising emissions are determined by a quite different set of decisions.
Reliable measurement requires choosing consistent boundaries. A yard reducing energy consumption in one workshop must not confuse that achievement with a reduction across the life of every yacht it builds. Similarly, a new material should be assessed for technical suitability and longevity as well as its production footprint.
Amer's agreement was presented during the 2026 Genoa Boat Show and positions the company within a broader effort to link Italian industrial financing with independently evidenced improvements. RINA's involvement could give customers greater confidence in reported performance if the indicators and supporting methods are made clear.
At this stage the deal is a framework for monitoring and financial assessment, not a published sustainability performance audit. Owners and industry buyers will be better able to judge its significance once the programme produces comparable, independently checked results.
