Ameritool Manufacturing demonstrates 316 stainless-steel marine gas springs and a 500-hour salt-spray comparison, highlighting hatch support and custom OEM supply.

Corrosion-resistant gas springs at IBEX

Ameritool Manufacturing brought its American-made 316 stainless-steel gas springs, dampers and tension-spring products to IBEX 2026 in Tampa, with a demonstration aimed at boatbuilders and marine original-equipment suppliers. The company's September announcement emphasised corrosion resistance, technical selection and comparatively short production lead times for parts used in demanding saltwater environments.

One feature of the stand was a side-by-side comparison of gas springs following 500 hours of continuous salt-spray exposure, allowing visitors to examine visual differences after an accelerated corrosion test. The release describes Ameritool's own product alongside a competing unit, but it does not publish a complete third-party laboratory report or justify claims that every possible grade of alternative steel performs identically.

Where small motion-control parts matter

Gas springs are common in hatch lids, lockers, storage compartments, doors, seat assemblies and access panels aboard boats and yachts. They are used to control movement or reduce the effort required to lift an appropriately designed cover, but cannot be selected merely by matching the dimensions of an old part. Required lifting force, pivot geometry, opening angle and any locking provisions must be taken into account.

Salt exposure brings another layer of risk because pitting or deterioration around rods, seals and end fittings can shorten service life or interfere with smooth operation. Type 316 stainless steel is often selected for its improved corrosion resistance in marine service, although no metal is immune to every environment. Cleaning, access and inspection remain necessary, particularly where a hatch opens over crew or guests.

Selection depends on load and mounting geometry

Ameritool says it works with OEM customers to determine spring force, mounting configuration and appropriate end fittings. This service may be relevant where a yacht outfitter has designed an unusual locker lid or where a refit replaces original hardware that is no longer available. The safe result depends on the complete mechanical arrangement, not just the nominal gas-spring rating.

Engineers should review the movement envelope, end-stop behaviour, structural fixing points and consequences of a spring losing pressure. A large lid that relies on gas springs for assistance may still require an independently rated mechanical hold-open device for maintenance or safe access. Installed components should be documented so the correct force and dimensions can be ordered during later service work.

A supplier focused on manufacturing responsiveness

Based in Central Square, New York, Ameritool produces stainless-steel motion-control equipment for marine, industrial and other specialist markets. It markets custom lengths, different force ranges and a choice of end fittings, while describing US production and stock availability as ways to reduce long lead times for many requirements.

The 2026 IBEX showcase is an opportunity for yards and builders to inspect physical samples and discuss their individual applications, not an announcement of an unverified order by a named superyacht. For a large-yacht engineering department, dependable replacement hatch hardware can be just as consequential as more visible guest-area technology when it affects safe access and routine maintenance.
