Astel Marine previews its next EQUATOR underwater lighting generation, emphasizing higher light output in a slim surface-mount design for yachts and superyachts.

A fresh generation of exterior hull illumination

Slovenian marine lighting supplier Astel has introduced the next generation of its EQUATOR underwater lighting series, positioning it as an updated high-output option for yacht exteriors. The company emphasizes a distinctive ultra-thin, surface-mounted format and says the new lights are intended as an alternative to conventional through-hull lighting installations.

The product announcement accompanies Astel's autumn trade-show programme rather than a statement that a particular vessel has already received the new series. EQUATOR was scheduled to be shown at IBEX in Tampa from 6 to 8 October, followed by a presence in the SuperYacht Pavilion at METSTRADE in Amsterdam from 17 to 19 November 2026.

Why mounting method matters in a refit

Underwater lights combine a visual role at anchor with demanding installation requirements at the boundary between the hull and the sea. A surface-mounted fixture can offer a different installation approach from a fitting designed to pass through a hull opening, although proper cable penetrations, sealing and structural compatibility remain important.

For a refit yard, the practical questions include whether a new light can fit within an established hull arrangement, where its power feed travels and whether the fitting stays accessible for maintenance. Selecting a housing solely for brightness may overlook heat management, electrical protection and the yacht's own underwater finish.

Lighting design beyond headline brightness

Astel describes increased output for the new EQUATOR models but has not supplied a complete set of independently comparable performance figures in the announcement. A useful technical comparison would require light distribution, electrical consumption, colour characteristics, thermal behaviour, operating depth and the manufacturer's installation limitations.

On a large yacht, designers also have to consider how separate light sources blend along the waterline and how the intended effect changes in different water conditions. The visual treatment of a beach club, transom platform or underwater hull area can demand different beam patterns, and there is no single light layout that suits every vessel.

Trade-show exposure and engineering follow-up

The manufacturer's public programme places EQUATOR before two different marine-industry audiences: North American builders and suppliers at IBEX, and an international superyacht equipment audience at METSTRADE. Astel lists stand 08.163 in the SuperYacht Pavilion for the Amsterdam exhibition.

Before specifying the series, naval architects, builders and service engineers will need the individual model drawings, electrical ratings and installation instructions. The announcement establishes a new product-generation preview and its planned market exposure, while detailed engineering suitability should be checked against each yacht's actual construction and operating requirements.
