Cox Marine to Put Diesel Outboard Propulsion on IBEX 2026 Agenda

Superyacht tenders and service boats face a different set of operating demands from the yachts they support. When a builder or fleet operator chooses propulsion, available fuel, service access and the way an engine fits the vessel's actual duties can matter as much as headline power.

These questions will be part of the discussion at IBEX 2026 in Tampa, where Cox Marine has confirmed that Hugh Hudleston will join the conference programme. The UK manufacturer says it will use the show, scheduled for 6–8 October at the Tampa Convention Center, to discuss high-performance diesel outboard propulsion with marine industry specialists.

Why the fuel choice matters aboard a tender

Diesel outboards have attracted attention from operators who already carry marine diesel for their parent vessel or wider fleet. Using a common fuel can simplify some storage and supply arrangements, although any change in propulsion still needs to be evaluated against the tender's weight, transom arrangement and expected operating conditions.

For superyacht teams, that assessment includes short transfers, passenger loads, idling time and the ability to obtain maintenance support in the destinations they visit. A diesel outboard may suit some of those demands, but there is no single engine configuration that is right for every tender or chase boat.

Cox Marine's V8 platform goes to the industry forum

The company's announcement says Hudleston will contribute experience from the development of its high-performance V8 diesel outboard. The presentation is framed around technology and operational choices rather than the unveiling of a new production model, and Cox has not announced a new engine launch in this release.

Cox's existing V8 range is designed as an alternative to gasoline outboards for operators seeking diesel-fuel compatibility and high torque. Those claims must still be assessed against a vessel's complete propulsion installation and its real-world duty cycle, rather than compared using engine specifications in isolation.

Integration is as important as the engine

Yacht tender designers must account for the engine's mass, steering and control systems, electrical integration and the space required for servicing. Owners also need to consider how a propulsion choice affects range, noise, spare parts and the ability to operate in regions with different dealer coverage.

The conversation at IBEX offers a useful opportunity to bring those practical questions together with the perspectives of manufacturers, designers and technical specialists. Cox has identified Hugh Hudleston as its speaker but has not given an exact session time in the announcement.

IBEX opens in Tampa in October
