Discover Boating August Index Falls to 74% Despite Media-Test Gains

Discover Boating's August Health Score Index is 74%, down nine points monthly, while spring-summer testing reports higher search activity and participation.

Discover Boating has reported an August 2026 Health Score Index of 74%, nine points below July and two points under the comparable prior-year reading. The National Marine Manufacturers Association says the score is also 26 points below its fixed August 2024 benchmark of 100.

The index measures early consumer signals for the United States recreational boating category, not completed sales of yachts above 24 metres. It should therefore be read as a view of boating interest and campaign reach rather than a direct measure of superyacht demand.

The headline measure softened in August

Market visibility remained above benchmark and year-earlier levels in the August detail. Participation also held above both comparisons, while reach among target prospects improved for the sixth consecutive month, according to NMMA's published metrics.

Other measures were less encouraging. Search trends were still below benchmark, social engagement fell against the previous month, and rolling twelve-month boat-show attendance remained soft, despite some improvements in engagement quality.

The spring and summer Test & Learn campaign produced results that move differently from the composite monthly score. Discover Boating attributed a five-percent rise in boating-related search activity and approximately three million incremental on-water visits to its tested activity.

Separate campaign tests reported activity gains

The organisation also reports that website visitors and so-called Hand Raisers grew at more than twice the rate of comparable markets without Discover Boating media. These are campaign-attributed outcomes, not independently audited registrations of new yacht owners.

The visitor-to-Hand-Raiser conversion measure increased from 14.6% to 18.3%, even as total visitors declined after a lower advertising spend. The distinction suggests that smaller audiences can show stronger intent when outreach becomes more focused.

Campaign spending tapered as the summer testing phase ended. NMMA says the findings are being applied to its fiscal-2027 strategy and to targeting and conversion work around Norwalk and winter boat shows.

Historical comparisons have limitations

The methodology requires care because 2026 is the first full year of the revised Health Score Index framework. Parts of the 2024 and 2025 baselines were estimated, so year-on-year comparisons are explicitly directional rather than fully like-for-like.

A change of two points against an estimated earlier series should not be treated as a precise prediction for a yacht dealership. The report combines awareness, interest and participation measures that can react differently as media spending and seasonality change.

What builders and the supply chain can use

Marine manufacturers and suppliers can use these figures to ask where their own customer journey loses momentum, from discovery to a dealer enquiry. But a large custom yacht has a much longer buying cycle and a different population than recreational campaign participants.

The August report provides measurable evidence of both weaker aggregate momentum and more effective tested outreach. Future months will establish whether the new campaign tactics translate into sustained interest when the year-on-year methodology becomes more consistent.
